Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Siege

At 2:00 PM, the emergency board meeting of Holloway Enterprises convened on the 50th floor of the Holloway Tower. The atmosphere in the mahogany-paneled room was that of a funeral. Outside, the streets were blocked by thousands of protesters holding signs bearing Claire’s picture and chanting for Grant’s imprisonment.

The nine remaining board members sat around the oblong glass table, whispering in hushed, panicked tones. The company's stock had dropped forty-one percent by noon. Three major investment banks had called in fifty-million-dollar credit facilities, threatening instant bankruptcy.

The heavy double doors swung open.

The board members turned, expecting to see interim legal counsel.

Instead, Ethan Bennett walked in.

He didn't ask for permission. He didn't introduce himself. He walked straight to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer, and sat down.

Behind him entered Claire.

She was in a wheelchair, pushed by a Bennett security operative, wearing an elegant black dress that covered her medical bandages. Though her face was pale, her dark eyes burned with an icy, unshakable authority. Resting on her lap was a bound leather folio.

"What is the meaning of this?" an elderly board member demanded, rising to his feet. "This is a closed executive session! Mrs. Holloway, you are a litigant against this company—"

"Sit down, Arthur," Ethan said quietly.

Arthur Vance stopped, his face draining of color as he recognized Ethan Bennett.

Ethan placed a single piece of paper in the center of the table.

"As of 1:15 PM," Ethan announced, his voice reverberating through the room, "Apex Vanguard Global acquired fifty-one point eight percent of the voting shares of Holloway Enterprises through a combination of open-market buyouts and acquiring the distressed debt previously held by Morgan Stanley."

Dead silence fell over the room. Several board members gasped.

"In short," Ethan continued smoothly, "I own this company. I own this building. And I own the seats you are currently occupying."

Ethan gestured toward Claire.

Claire opened the leather folio on her lap and looked across the table at the men who had bowed to Grant Holloway for years while ignoring his abuse.

"Grant Holloway has been removed as CEO," Claire said clearly, her voice echoing with profound authority. "Pursuant to my legal spousal rights and the majority ownership secured by my family, I am assuming the role of Chairwoman of the Board effective immediately."

She pushed copies of the federal indictments across the table.

"You have two choices," Claire said, looking directly at Arthur Vance. "You can unanimously approve my restructuring plan, surrender all bonuses accrued over the last three years to fund the company’s legal defense and charitable trusts, and resign by five o'clock... or the Department of Justice will unseal these financial records, and all nine of you will join Grant in federal custody by nightfall."

Arthur Vance looked at the documents, looked at Ethan Bennett’s impassive, lethal gaze, and slowly slumped back into his chair.

"Motion to approve," Arthur whispered weakly.

"Seconded," three other voices murmured instantly.

Claire closed her folio. "Meeting adjourned."
