Chapter 2 - Iron and Blood

The rain outside Pacific Crest Medical Center came down in violent sheets, but inside the fourth-floor obstetrics wing, the silence was suffocating. Claire lay beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, her knuckles white as she gripped the side rail of the hospital bed. Every shallow breath sent a sharp, tearing pain through her lower abdomen. Beside her, the fetal monitor hummed with an erratic, fragile rhythm. Noah was fighting, but his heartbeat was too fast, too strained.

Two armed guards wearing private Holloway Security badges stood outside her door. They had already turned away a junior resident who tried to enter with Claire’s updated ultrasound scans. Grant Holloway had left clear instructions before walking out with Madison: Claire was not to speak to any outside visitors, no police reports were to be filed, and the hospital was to keep her strictly isolated under the guise of "VIP patient privacy."

"Mrs. Holloway needs to rest," the lead guard barked at a nurse who approached with an IV bag. "Mr. Holloway’s personal physician will be here within the hour. Step back."

Before the nurse could reply, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor blasted open. The sound cracked like thunder through the polished tile hallway.

Four men in tailored charcoal suits entered first, moving with mechanical, lethal precision. They cleared the hall in seconds, flanking the entryway and forcing two Holloway guards against the wall with blinding speed. Behind them strode Ethan Bennett.

Ethan was six-foot-three of unyielding granite, wearing an overcoat soaked with rain. His dark eyes scanned the corridor until they locked onto the guards posted outside Claire’s door. He didn't ask questions. He didn't slow his stride.

"Sir, you can't be back here—" the lead Holloway guard began, reaching toward his concealed holster.

Ethan crossed the distance between them in two brutal steps. His hand snapped forward, catching the guard by the throat and slamming him backward against the wall with such force that the drywall fractured behind his head. The guard choked, his feet dangling inches above the linoleum.

"Listen to me very carefully," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, colder than ice. "Grant Holloway signs your paycheck. But if you touch that holster, your family will spend the rest of their lives wondering which ocean I buried you in. Disarm him."

Ethan's security team disarmed both men in three seconds, pinning them to the floor with zip-ties. Ethan dropped the gasping guard, adjusted his cuffs, and pushed open the door to Claire’s room.

The fury in his eyes vanished the moment he saw Claire.

She looked so fragile, so terribly pale against the white sheets, her hand trembling over her swollen belly. Blood had soaked through her evening dress, ruined and discarded in a biohazard bin in the corner.

"Ethan..." Claire’s voice cracked into a broken sob.

In three strides, Ethan was at her bedside, dropping to his knees. He took her cold, trembling hand between his large palms. For the first time in ten years, Claire saw tears glint in her brother’s eyes.

"I’m here, little bird," Ethan whispered, using the childhood nickname he hadn't spoken since she married Grant. "I’m here. No one will ever touch you again."

"Noah..." she wept, clutching his hand to her chest. "Grant... he kicked me, Ethan. He looked at me and kicked me..."

Ethan’s jaw tightened until the tendons in his neck looked like wire cables. He kissed her forehead gently, smoothing back her sweat-soaked hair.

"Noah is going to live," Ethan promised, his voice absolute and unbreakable. "And Grant Holloway is going to burn."
