Chapter 6 - Blood in the Water

At the LAPD central holding facility, Grant Holloway sat in an interrogation room with his hands cuffed to a metal ring bolted into the table. The silk tuxedo shirt he wore was stained with sweat and dirt. His hair was disheveled, and his face was gray with panic.

His attorney, Marcus Vance, sat beside him with an open briefcase, looking like a man whose parachute had failed to open at ten thousand feet.

"You need to post bail, Marcus!" Grant hissed through clenched teeth. "Write the check! Holloway Enterprises has two hundred million in liquid reserves at Chase!"

"You don't understand, Grant," Marcus whispered, trembling. "The judge refused bail. They’ve designated you a flight risk due to your private jet and foreign assets. But that’s not the worst part."

"What could be worse than this?!"

"Claire’s brother," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

Grant scoffed loudly. "Ethan Bennett? The failed freight manager? What is that pathetic peasant going to do?"

Marcus looked at Grant as if Grant had completely lost his mind. "Did you ever actually research Ethan Bennett before you married Claire?"

"He lives in Seattle running some no-name logistics firm," Grant said dismissively. "Claire said he hated corporate politics."

"Ethan Bennett is the founder and majority owner of Apex Vanguard Global," Marcus said, each word hitting Grant like a physical blow. "The sovereign wealth contractor that manages maritime security for eighty percent of Pacific shipping lanes. He owns the container lines Holloway Enterprises leases. He holds the secondary debt on our corporate headquarters. Grant... Ethan Bennett is worth twelve billion dollars. He could buy and dismantle your entire family empire before lunch."

Grant’s breath caught in his throat. His chest felt constricted, as if an invisible band of steel were tightening around his lungs.

"No," Grant stammered, shaking his head in wild denial. "No, Claire grew up in a modest house in Oregon! She drove a ten-year-old sedan when I met her!"

"Because their father wanted them to learn humility after selling his tech patents," Marcus replied grimly. "Ethan never took a dime from their father; he built Apex Vanguard from the dirt with his own bare hands after leaving the Navy. And right now, Ethan Bennett is executing a hostile takeover of Holloway Enterprises."

Before Grant could scream, the interrogation door opened.

A detective stepped in, followed by a federal prosecutor carrying a stack of files three inches thick.

"Grant Holloway," the prosecutor said, dropping the heavy files onto the metal table with a dull thud. "Your day just got significantly worse. We have received an encrypted ledger provided by Mrs. Claire Bennett-Holloway detailing eighty-four counts of money laundering, wire fraud, and criminal tax evasion."
