Chapter 10 - Sanctuary

Two weeks passed.

The media storm surrounding Holloway Enterprises had reached a fever pitch, but Claire was shielded from it all. She had been moved to the Bennett family estate—a heavily fortified sixty-acre coastal compound in Montecito.

Surrounded by ten-foot stone walls, private security checkpoints, and lush orchards, Claire finally found peace. Noah’s vitals had completely stabilized. The doctors confirmed that the placental tear had healed without needing premature delivery. Noah was going to make it to full term.

Maya spent her afternoons sitting on the sunlit terrace with Claire, designing the nursery in the east wing of the manor. Ethan had returned from New York after successfully finalizing the liquidation of Holloway Enterprises’ toxic assets, rebranding the remaining ethical infrastructure under Bennett Global.

That evening, the family gathered around the long dining table. For the first time in three years, laughter filled the room.

"The nursery furniture arrived from Milan," Maya announced proudly, showing Claire fabric swatches. "Soft gray and lavender. Noah is going to have the best view of the Pacific Ocean in California."

Ethan poured Claire a glass of sparkling cider. "The final divorce decree was signed by the judge today. Grant Holloway will be transferred to Pelican Bay State Prison next month to await trial. His defense attorney quit yesterday after Grant ran out of funds to pay his retainer."

Claire looked around the warm, candlelit room. Her brother. Her sister. The safe haven she thought she had lost forever when she walked down the aisle with a monster.

"Thank you," Claire whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Both of you. You saved my life. You saved Noah."

Ethan smiled, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. "You're a Bennett, Claire. We protect our own. Nothing will ever threaten you or that boy again."

Claire smiled, placing both hands over her belly. Noah gave a strong, healthy kick, as if agreeing with his uncle.

At ten o’clock, Claire retired to the master suite on the second floor. The ocean breeze blew gently through the open French doors leading to the balcony. Outside, Bennett security guards patrolled the perimeter with trained guard dogs. She felt entirely, completely safe.

She slipped into bed, turned off the lamp, and closed her eyes.
