Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO LOST CONTROL

Months later, Victoria requested a meeting.

She was no longer the commanding figure who had once controlled every family gathering. The legal case had damaged her reputation, and the financial investigation had uncovered decisions that could not be dismissed as simple mistakes.

Liam agreed to meet her in the presence of his attorney.

Victoria looked older.

"I loved Emily," she said.

"You hurt her."

"I thought I was protecting her."

"You protected your control over her."

Victoria's hands trembled.

She admitted she had feared losing the family estate and believed that keeping Nora hidden would prevent a legal dispute. She had also resented the possibility that Liam and Emily's children might become the center of decisions she could no longer control.

But she could not offer an explanation that made her actions acceptable.

"Can you forgive me?" she asked.

Liam considered the question.

"Forgiveness isn't a way to erase what happened. The girls' safety comes first. If they ever want a relationship with you, that decision will be theirs."

Victoria lowered her head.

For once, she had no authority to demand anything.

Later that week, Ava and Nora helped Liam plant two small trees in the garden.

One was for Ava.

The other was for Nora.

They tied silver ribbons around the trunks and placed their mother's photograph between them.

"Will the trees grow together?" Nora asked.

"If we take care of them," Liam said.

Ava squeezed her sister's hand.

"Then we'll take care of them."

The girls were not magically healed. Some nights they still had questions. Sometimes Nora felt torn between two families, and Ava struggled with the knowledge that her grandmother had lied to her.

But they were allowed to speak, to grieve, and to be children.

And Liam was finally listening.
