Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED

The woman in the photograph was identified as Rachel Bennett, a former pediatric nurse who had worked at St. Catherine's Hospital around the time Ava was born.

She had left her job abruptly seven years earlier.

Her employment file contained a resignation letter, but the signature did not match her other documents. Investigators also discovered that she had received a substantial payment from a company connected to Victoria's family.

Liam recognized the company immediately.

It was one of the firms Victoria used to manage the family estate.

Rebecca warned him not to confront his mother-in-law without understanding the evidence.

"If she altered medical or legal records, we need to know exactly what happened before anyone tips her off."

But Liam had already spent seven years trusting Victoria.

He was done accepting half-answers.

A former housekeeper named Denise Walker agreed to meet him at a small café outside Seattle.

Denise looked over her shoulder before speaking.

"Mrs. Hale told us the second baby had died," she said. "She said it was a tragedy and that the family needed privacy."

Liam gripped his coffee cup.

"Second baby?"

"Emily gave birth to twins."

The words seemed to stop the air in his lungs.

Denise explained that Emily had delivered two girls. One was placed in Liam's arms. The other was taken for additional medical care, according to the story Victoria told the staff.

Days later, Denise overheard Victoria arguing with a hospital administrator.

The argument concerned an amended birth certificate and an emergency guardianship order.

"Did Emily know?" Liam asked.

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know. But she kept asking about the second baby."

Liam remembered Emily's final weeks in the hospital, the exhaustion in her eyes, and the way Victoria had insisted that he stay home and rest.

He had thought his wife was recovering.

Now he wondered how many moments had been stolen from him.

Denise handed him a folded note she had kept for years.

It contained a name and an address.

Rachel Bennett.
