Chapter 4 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Rachel Bennett was living under her maiden name in a modest house outside Portland.

When Liam arrived with Rebecca and the detectives, Rachel opened the door and immediately began to cry.

"You look like Emily," she whispered.

Liam could barely speak.

Rachel explained that Emily had discovered she was carrying twins during a late ultrasound. The pregnancy was complicated, and the family was advised to prepare for a difficult delivery.

After the birth, Victoria claimed one baby had a serious medical condition and needed specialized care. She told Liam the child had died before he could see her.

But the child had not died.

Rachel had been asked to care for the infant temporarily while the family arranged treatment. Then Victoria produced legal papers stating that the baby's biological father had relinquished his rights.

The signature was supposedly Liam's.

It was not.

"I told her the signature looked wrong," Rachel said. "She threatened to have me arrested for taking a child from the hospital."

Rachel had kept copies of the documents because she feared something terrible would happen.

One page contained the name Nora Emily Carter.

Another listed a different surname, created through an amended birth record.

Rachel had eventually discovered that Nora had been placed with a family in Oregon under circumstances that required legal review. She had tried to contact Emily, but Victoria intercepted the messages.

Then Emily died.

Rachel believed that the family would never be reunited.

"What happened on Ava's third birthday?" Liam asked.

Rachel wiped her face.

"Emily had left instructions before she died. She wanted the girls to meet. She had prepared matching silver-star pendants, one for each child."

Rachel had brought Nora to the birthday celebration, hoping to deliver the pendant and tell Liam the truth.

Victoria caught them.

She separated the children, took the document envelope, and ordered Rachel to leave.

"She told me if I ever came near the girls again, she would destroy my life."

Liam stood motionless.

His wife had tried to protect both daughters even when she knew she might not survive.

And the woman he had trusted had turned that final wish into a weapon.
