Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

The investigation revealed that Victoria had used forged documents to alter the girls' records and misrepresent Nora's status in the family trust.

Several financial transfers were frozen. Her attorney withdrew after discovering evidence that she had concealed from him. The authorities continued reviewing possible criminal charges.

Victoria's defense was that she had acted to preserve the family fortune.

But a fortune could not explain why she had ignored Emily's written wishes, frightened employees into silence, and convinced Liam that one of his daughters was dead.

Then Rachel produced another letter.

Emily had written it shortly before her death.

In it, she explained that Victoria had always treated family as something to control rather than something to nurture. Emily had feared her mother would use money, reputation, and legal influence to keep the children apart.

The letter ended with a message for Liam:

If you are reading this, please don't waste your life blaming yourself. Love both girls loudly enough that they never have to wonder whether they belong.

Liam read the letter to Ava and Nora at bedtime.

Neither girl understood every word, but both understood that their mother had loved them.

Over the following weeks, Liam arranged therapy for the family and established a routine that allowed Nora to maintain contact with her adoptive parents while building a relationship with him and Ava.

He refused to describe Nora as a missing piece of property or an inheritance dispute.

She was his daughter, with her own feelings, memories, and choices.

One evening, Nora asked whether she had to move into his house immediately.

"No," Liam told her. "You can take your time. This is your family, but your feelings matter more than any schedule."

Nora smiled.

"Then maybe I'll sleep over on Friday."

It was a small decision.

But for the first time, it was hers.
