Chapter 7 - THE FIRST MEETING

Liam did not rush the reunion.
With help from child psychologists and the authorities, he arranged a gradual introduction in a quiet family center filled with books, toys, and sunlight.
Ava arrived holding Mr. Buttons.
Nora entered wearing a yellow sweater and carrying a small stuffed fox.
For several seconds, the girls simply stared at one another.
Then Ava whispered, "You look like me."
Nora nodded.
"You look like me, too."
They sat on opposite ends of a sofa while the adults gave them space. Slowly, the questions began.
Did they like the same food?
Did they both hate thunderstorms?
Did either of them have a favorite song?
The answers came back with astonishing similarities.
When Ava mentioned her silver-star pendant, Nora reached beneath her sweater and pulled out an identical one.
Their mother had arranged for both to be delivered, but Victoria had prevented the girls from exchanging them.
Ava began to cry.
"Mommy knew about you?"
Nora nodded, her eyes filling.
"Rachel told me that our mom wanted us together."
Liam knelt in front of them.
"She did. And I should have found you sooner."
Nora studied him.
"Did you know I existed?"
"No, sweetheart. I was told you had died. I believed it because I trusted the wrong person."
"Are you angry with me?"
The question shattered him.
"Never," Liam said. "Not for one second. You never did anything wrong."
Nora moved closer.
"Can I call you Dad?"
Liam opened his arms.
"Whenever you're ready."
She leaned into him.
Ava joined them, wrapping both arms around her sister.
For the first time in seven years, the family Emily had wanted was together.
But the reunion was only the beginning.
Nora still needed time to adjust. Ava had to understand why her grandmother had lied. And the legal investigation threatened to expose even more painful secrets.
May you like
Liam promised both girls one thing.
No more decisions about their lives would be made behind closed doors.
