Chapter 8 - A Dinner by the Ocean

That evening, the private cliffside terrace at the resort’s French restaurant was cleared for a single table.

Declan sat across from Grace. The candlelight flickered in the soft trade winds, reflecting against the crystal wine glasses. Grace was drinking chilled sparkling peach cider, while Declan had a glass of twenty-year-old single malt scotch.

"Ethan’s personal lawyer called Eleanor twenty minutes ago," Declan said, taking a sip of his drink. "He told Ethan that if he doesn't take Option A, he’s insane. He’ll sign tonight."

Grace let out a long, quiet breath, watching the waves crash against the black rocks far below. "It’s over, then."

"The corporate part is over," Declan said. "Vance Enterprises will be absorbed into Pierce Global’s infrastructure. Marcus will stay on as interim CEO. The harbor project will proceed, and the shares held in trust for your baby are secure. You are now the wealthiest single shareholder in the regional development sector."

Grace smiled faintly, looking down at her cider. "I never cared about the money, Declan. I just wanted a life that wasn't built on sand."

"I know." Declan set his glass down. His expression softened, the sharp edges of the corporate conqueror melting away into something far more dangerous: raw, patient devotion. "I should have stopped you from marrying him six years ago, Grace."

Grace looked up, her heart giving an unexpected, traitorous flutter. "You were in Singapore closing the telecom merger. You didn't even come to the wedding."

"Because if I had walked into that church," Declan said, his voice low and intensely steady, "I would have carried you out of it. And you weren't ready to see who Ethan really was yet."

Grace leaned back, the breeze catching her golden hair. "And you waited all this time?"

"I don't invest in things I intend to abandon," Declan said.

Suddenly, Grace felt a distinct, sharp flutter beneath her ribs. She gasped softly, her hand flying to her stomach.

Declan was on his feet instantly, his instincts razor-sharp. "Grace? What’s wrong? Is it pain?"

"No," Grace whispered, her lips parting into an involuntary, radiant smile. "No... he kicked. Truly kicked. Not just flutters."

Declan stood beside her chair, hesitating for a fraction of a second. Grace looked up at him, seeing the fierce, unyielding protection in his face, and reached out, gently taking his hand and placing it over the swell of her dress.

Beneath Declan’s palm, the baby kicked again—strong, deliberate, and alive.

Declan went completely still. For a man who commanded an eleven-billion-dollar empire with a wave of his hand, he looked entirely humbled, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that took her breath away.

"You and this child will never be unprotected again, Grace," Declan said softly. "I swear that on my life."
