Chapter 10 - Absolute Ruin

Ethan hit the ground, groaning, his nose bleeding onto the white coral stone.
Declan stood over him, his navy suit immaculately in place, but his face was transformed into a mask of pure, lethal fury. Two armed security guards appeared out of the shadows like specters, flanking him.
"Declan," Grace breathed, trembling as she leaned against a stone bench, holding her stomach.
Declan didn't take his eyes off Ethan. "Did he hurt you?"
"No... he just grabbed my arms. I’m alright."
Declan looked down at Ethan, who was scrambling to push himself up against the pillar, spitting blood onto the stones.
"You made a mistake touching her, Ethan," Declan said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. "You had a deal. You had three million dollars and a quiet exit."
"Screw you, Pierce!" Ethan wheezed, wiping his mouth. "She’s my wife! That’s my kid!"
"Not anymore," Declan said.
He signaled to the head of security. "Call the local gendarmerie. File charges for felony domestic assault on resort grounds. Then call the United States Consulate. Inform them that Ethan Vance has attempted witness tampering while under federal civil investigation."
Ethan’s eyes widened with terror as the reality crashed down on him. "No... wait. Declan, please. Don't call the police. If I get arrested here, the SEC will trigger the automatic audit freeze immediately!"
"The audit is already triggered," Declan said coldly. "Vanessa sent Eleanor the encrypted server keys thirty minutes ago. She gave us the entire ledger of your offshore accounts, including the five million you hid in the Zurich shell."
Ethan froze. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. "Vanessa... gave you the keys?"
"You built your life on loyalty you bought with stolen money, Ethan," Grace said, stepping up beside Declan, her voice steady and clear. "You shouldn't be surprised when the people you paid decide to sell."
The guards stepped forward, hauling Ethan roughly to his feet and pinning his hands behind his back. As they dragged him away down the corridor toward the administrative offices to await the island police, Ethan didn't scream anymore. He didn't fight. He was broken, hollow, and completely finished.
Declan turned to Grace. His hands, which had looked ready to kill moments before, were gentle as he touched her shoulders.
"Are you truly okay?" he asked softly.
Grace looked into his eyes, feeling the first real sense of peace she had known in six months settle deep into her chest.

"I’m more than okay," she whispered. "I’m free."
