Chapter 2 - The Cost of Looking Down

Grace did not look at Vanessa’s face. She looked at her shoes.

They were Christian Louboutin patent leather pumps, five-inch stilettos with the signature crimson sole. Grace recognized them instantly because the corporate credit card statement for Vance Enterprises had crossed her private desk three weeks ago, categorized under *Client Entertainment.*

"Cute shoes, Vanessa," Grace said evenly. Her voice carried no malice, no trembling fracture of a betrayed spouse. It was the tone of a woman noting the brand of milk in an office refrigerator. "Though I’m surprised you’re wearing them on cobblestone. The heel caps ruin so easily."

Vanessa’s lips parted, but no sound escaped. Her manicured fingers drifted toward the collar of her red dress, as if attempting to pull fabric over bare skin that had suddenly become scorching hot.

Ethan took another step forward, his jaw tight. "Grace, stop this. What the hell is going on? Why aren't you in Boston? Your doctor explicitly told you—"

"My doctor cleared me for private air travel yesterday morning," Grace interrupted, her blue eyes shifting back to him. "And you told me you were in New York closing the secondary financing round for the harbor project."

"I am working on the financing," Ethan hissed under his breath, casting a paranoid glance across the marble expanse of the resort foyer. A few wealthy vacationers were watching, their interest piqued by the silent standoff. "This is an off-site operational debrief. Vanessa is here to manage media strategy."

Declan Pierce let out a quiet, dry chuckle. It wasn't loud, but in the soaring acoustics of the open-air pavilion, it hit like a slap.

Ethan’s gaze snapped to the billionaire. "Mr. Pierce. I didn't realize you were on St. Barthélemy."

Declan didn't offer a hand. He kept both hands resting loosely in the pockets of his tailored navy trousers. At six-foot-three, he towered over Ethan by nearly three inches, and his silver-flecked charcoal eyes were completely unreadable.

"I go where my investments are, Ethan," Declan said smoothly. His baritone was deep, effortless, and terrifyingly calm. "And right now, Vance Enterprises is occupying an unreasonable amount of my time."

Ethan blinked, thrown off balance. "Your investments? Vance Enterprises is a privately held family corporation. You don't have a position in my company."

"Not yet," Grace said.

The elevator doors chimed with a soft bronze bell, sliding open to reveal an interior wrapped in teak and brushed gold.

Grace turned toward the car. She stepped inside with deliberate grace, one hand gently supporting the small, distinct curve beneath her emerald dress. Declan stepped in right behind her, turning to face forward, his shoulder almost brushing hers. He looked like an apex predator standing guard over something he considered entirely non-negotiable.

Ethan lunged toward the doors. "Grace! You don't get to walk away like this. We are married. We are having a child!"

Grace met his frantic eyes through the closing gap.

"We *were* having a life, Ethan," she said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it silenced the entire lobby. "Now, we’re having an audit."

The teak doors clicked shut, severing the space between them.
