Chapter 11 - The Midnight Safe

Two hours later, the penthouse suite was silent.
The local French police had taken Ethan into custody without incident; the assault charges, combined with the emergency restraining order filed by Eleanor, guaranteed he would remain in a holding cell until an extradition hearing could be scheduled. His empire was gone. His reputation was ashes.
Grace sat on the plush white sofa in the penthouse living room, a soft cashmere blanket draped over her legs. The French balcony doors were open, letting in the sound of the ocean.
Declan walked in from the study, carrying two folders: one was the fully executed Vance Enterprises transfer agreement, now signed by Marcus and the board, granting full custodial control to Grace.
"Everything is finalized," Declan said, sitting beside her on the sofa. "The harbor project breaks ground on schedule next month under your name. Ethan is out. Completely."
Grace closed her eyes, letting out a breath that felt like shedding a lead weight. "Thank you, Declan. For everything."
"You don't have to thank me, Grace," Declan said quietly, his hand resting near hers on the sofa. "I told you. I’m not going anywhere."
Before Grace could reply, Eleanor entered the room from the foyer. Her expression was completely devoid of its usual professional calm; she looked shaken, her fingers clutching a heavy, vintage steel dispatch box sealed with wax.
"Eleanor?" Grace asked, sitting up straight. "What is that?"
"The French authorities completed the preliminary search of Ethan’s villa before sealing it," Eleanor said, her voice unusually tight. "They found this in the villa’s concealed wall safe. It wasn't registered under Vance Enterprises. It was registered under a private lockbox charter dating back twenty-six years."
Declan frowned, his corporate instincts flaring. "What’s inside it?"
Eleanor broke the wax seal, opening the heavy metal lid. Inside lay a thick sheaf of yellowed medical records and a handwritten letter addressed not to Ethan, but directly to Grace.
Eleanor pulled out the top document, her eyes scanning the lines before looking up at Grace with sheer disbelief.
"Grace... Ethan didn't marry you because your father funded Vance Enterprises," Eleanor whispered.
Grace felt the air freeze in her lungs. "What are you talking about?"
"This is an original trust deed from the Pierce-Vance joint venture from twenty-six years ago," Eleanor said, handing the trembling paper to Declan. "Your biological father wasn't Arthur Vance’s business partner, Grace. Arthur Vance was your legal guardian after your real father died."
Declan looked down at the paper, his entire body going rigid. The color vanished from his face as his eyes tracked down the names on the document.
"Declan?" Grace whispered, terror and confusion suddenly rising in her chest. "What does it say? Whose name is on the deed?"
Declan slowly lifted his head, his charcoal eyes filled with a storm of revelation and shock that Grace had never seen in him before.
"Grace," Declan said, his voice barely a breath. "Your father... was my father’s secret partner. You don't just own Vance Enterprises."

He swallowed hard, holding the document toward her.
"You own half of Pierce Global."
