Chapter 7 - The Mistress at the Pool

By five o'clock, the meeting was over.
Ethan had not signed yet. He had demanded two hours to consult with his independent legal counsel, stumbling out of the penthouse like a man who had survived a car wreck only to find his home burned to the ground.
Grace walked down to the private garden path overlooking the cliffside. The tropical air was cooling down, smelling of salt spray and blooming jasmine. She needed air. The tension of holding her composure for hours had left her muscles aching.
"Grace."
She stopped.
Vanessa was standing beneath a pergola covered in bougainvillea, holding her purse tightly against her stomach. Her designer sunglasses were perched on her head, revealing eyes red-rimmed from crying.
"I didn't want this," Vanessa said, taking a timid step forward. "You have to believe me. Ethan told me you two were already separated. He told me the marriage was over and that the baby was an accident—a final attempt to keep up appearances before the divorce!"
Grace looked at the younger woman. There was no hatred in her eyes, only an exhausting, pitying clarity.
"Vanessa," Grace said softly. "Did you really believe an executive who steals from his own family trust would be honest with his mistress?"
Vanessa swallowed hard, tears slipping down her cheeks. "The Tribeca condo... the lawyers told me they’re seizing the deed. I’ll lose everything. My reputation, my career... no PR agency in New York will touch me if this goes public."
"Then I suggest you think very carefully about your next move," Grace said, stepping closer. "Because right now, the only person standing between you and a federal conspiracy charge is me."
Vanessa looked up, startled. "What do you mean?"
"Ethan used your name and your signature on the Cayman transfers," Grace said, her tone absolute. "You can either be his co-conspirator when the Department of Justice opens the file, or you can provide my legal team with every text, email, and private message he sent you regarding those offshore accounts."
"If I give you that... will you leave me out of the indictment?"
"I won't protect you from losing your job, Vanessa," Grace said bluntly. "You chose to sleep with a married CEO; you reap the professional harvest of that decision. But I will ensure that Declan’s legal team lists you as a cooperating witness rather than a target."
Vanessa dropped her head, her shoulders heaving with silent sobs. "I have the emails on my private cloud. Everything. From the first wire to the last."
May you like
"Send them to Eleanor," Grace said, turning away. "Before sunset."
