Chapter 6 - Blood in the Boardroom

Ethan stormed into the penthouse conference room, but Vanessa was no longer behind him. She had chosen to wait in the corridor, terrified of facing Declan Pierce’s legal team.
Ethan didn't sit down. He slammed his palms onto the mahogany table, glaring down the length of the room at his wife.
"Is this a joke to you, Grace?" he spat. "You hire lawyers to freeze my cards? You conspire with Pierce to steal my company while you’re carrying my baby?"
Declan didn't move from his seat, but his voice was like ice breaking on a lake. "Ethan. Sit down."
"Stay out of this, Pierce! This is between me and my wife!"
"Actually, Ethan, it isn't," Marcus Vance said from across the table. "You stole seven million dollars from the harbor development escrow to cover your personal losses in the crypto fund last autumn. We have the wire receipts. Pierce’s forensic team found them three days ago."
Ethan went chalk-white. His throat convulsed. "That was... that was a temporary bridge loan. I authorized it under general managerial discretion."
"You authorized a fraudulent wire transfer across state lines," Grace said calmly from the head of the table. "And you used an LLC registered in Vanessa’s name to broker the transfer."
Ethan stumbled back a half-step. "Grace... listen to me. We can fix this. You're emotional right now, the pregnancy—"
"Do not insult my intelligence by blaming my hormones, Ethan," Grace interrupted, her voice striking like a hammer. "You took Vanessa to Paris in November. You took her to Aspen in January. You bought her a condo in Tribeca using funds earmarked for our child’s trust. I didn't say anything because I wanted every single wire to clear. I wanted the paper trail completely undeniable."
She pushed a blue leather binder across the polished wood toward him.
"Here is your choice," Grace said. "Option A: You resign as CEO and Chairman immediately. You surrender your remaining equity at fair market value to Declan’s fund, which will use those proceeds to pay off the harbor debt and keep Vance Enterprises out of bankruptcy. You sign an uncontested divorce agreement granting me sole legal and physical custody, and you walk away with three million dollars and your freedom."
Ethan trembled with rage. "And Option B?"
"Option B," Declan said, leaning forward, his gaze terrifyingly focused, "is that I hand this binder to the Southern District of New York at eight o'clock tomorrow morning. By noon, the FBI will seize your passport. By Friday, you will be indicted on four counts of wire fraud, two counts of money laundering, and corporate embezzlement. You will lose the company, you will lose your freedom, and your child will only know your name from a federal inmate registry."
Ethan stared at Declan, then at Marcus, and finally at Grace.
He searched her eyes for any shred of the soft, compliant woman who had spent five years organizing his dinner parties and smiling at his corporate galas. There was nothing there. Only steel.
"You planned this," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. "From the very beginning."
May you like
"No," Grace said softly. "You planned the crime, Ethan. I just planned the consequences."
