Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars

Three weeks had passed since the night Leo Moretti was born into the world.

The private VIP recovery wing of St. Jude's had been completely locked down by the Moretti family. No unauthorized personnel were permitted on the entire seventh floor. The corridor outside Elena’s suite was adorned with bouquets of white roses, baby gifts from allied families across the country seeking the Don's favor, and round-the-clock security led personally by Luca.

Inside the sun-drenched room, the atmosphere was a world away from the violence of the mafia.

Elena sat in an oversized velvet rocking chair near the window, dressed in a pale cream cashmere sweater. Little Leo, having surpassed all medical expectations with his rapid weight gain and ferocious appetite, slept soundly against her chest, swaddled in a hand-knitted baby blanket.

The door clicked open, and Vincent entered.

He had shed his dark tactical coat and weapon harness, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms and dark trousers. In his hands, he carried a warm cup of herbal tea and a leather-bound folder.

He set the tea on the side table, kneeling beside the rocking chair. His fingers gently stroked the soft, downy hair on his son's head before his gaze drifted up to Elena.

"You look radiant," Vincent said softly.

Elena smiled, leaning her head against his hand as he cupped her cheek. "I look like a mother who hasn't had four consecutive hours of sleep in twenty days."

"You look like my world," he corrected, pressing a tender kiss to her lips.

He picked up the leather folder he had brought with him and placed it in her lap.

"What is this?" Elena asked, looking down at the thick document bearing legal seals.

"Our future," Vincent answered.

Elena opened the folder. The first page was a complete, irrevocable transfer of ownership for the Moretti syndicate's shipping docks, transport fleets, and real estate holdings into a legally untouchable, fully legitimate international logistics trust.

Beneath that was a formal resignation of syndicate leadership.

Elena’s breath hitched. She looked at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. "Vincent... you're stepping down?"

Vincent nodded slowly, his expression serene and resolute. "Luca is taking over the family's enforcement division, restructuring it into a private licensed security firm. The criminal elements of the syndicate are being dissolved. I have spent the last three weeks transferring our assets into legitimate corporations. We are clean, Elena. Completely clean."

"Your father's legacy—"

"My father built an empire of blood, and it almost cost me the only two people who matter in this universe," Vincent interrupted, taking her hand in his. "I promised you peace. I promised our son a life where he never has to check his rearview mirror or wonder if his father is coming home from a meeting."

He pointed to the final page in the folder.

It was a deed to a sprawling coastal estate in Taormina, Sicily—a sunlit villa surrounded by lemon groves, olive orchards, and the sapphire waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

"I had our architects begin renovations two weeks ago," Vincent explained, a rare, hopeful smile touching his lips. "There are no surveillance towers. No barbed wire. Just high stone walls covered in bougainvillea, a private beach for Leo to learn to swim, and a garden where you will never have to answer to anyone ever again."

Tears shimmered in Elena’s eyes. "When do we leave?"

"As soon as Dr. Campbell clears Leo for international travel," Vincent said. "Next week."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet ring box. He opened it to reveal a matching platinum wedding band, engraved on the inside with a single date: the day Leo was born.

"We have an appointment at the cathedral tomorrow morning," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with devotion. "Just you, me, our son, and God. No politicians. No rival bosses. Just the two of us."

Elena leaned forward, closing the small distance between them, pressing her lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss that washed away every tear she had ever shed in the dark.

"I love you, Vincent," she whispered against his lips.

May you like

"I have loved you through death, Elena," he answered, his forehead resting against hers as their sleeping son breathed softly between them. "And I will love you through eternity."
