Chapter 4 - Paternity and Shadows

Vincent’s breath hitched in his throat.
The room seemed to tilt on its axis. For four long, agonizing years, he had lived as an empty vessel, operating solely on cold vengeance, brutal efficiency, and loyalty to the syndicate code. He had accepted a life devoid of light, believing his soul had been permanently buried in the ashes of that cabin.
Now, kneeling beside the woman he had never stopped loving, feeling the undeniable heat radiating from her skin, his hand moved on pure instinct.
He laid his wide, calloused palm flat against the center of her swollen belly.
Beneath his palm, a distinct, powerful kick pushed against the fabric of her uniform.
A sharp, ragged breath tore from Vincent’s chest. The man who had faced down federal prosecutors, rival cartels, and gunfire without blinking bowed his head, resting his forehead against Elena’s lap. His broad shoulders trembled as four years of unshed grief and suppressed love shattered the fortress he had built around his heart.
"My son," Vincent murmured against her clothes, his voice thick with tears. "My blood."
Elena’s fingers tentatively reached out, tangling in his dark, thick hair. For months, she had lived in terror of him discovering the truth, afraid Victoria would make good on her threats, afraid Vincent had moved on and become a stranger. But feeling him break down in front of her melted the final wall of fear.
A soft knock at the study door broke the silence.
Vincent was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his lethal composure sliding back into place, though his eyes remained fierce and protective. He turned to face the door. "Enter."
Dr. Campbell, the Moretti family's private physician for over two decades, walked in with a black medical kit, flanked by Luca. Campbell was an elderly gentleman with sharp blue eyes who asked no questions about bullet wounds or bruised knuckles, but seeing the feared mafia don standing guard over a visibly pregnant maid made his eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
"Luca informed me of a fall on the stairs," Dr. Campbell said, immediately setting his bag on the coffee table. "Let's have a look."
"Be gentle," Vincent commanded, his tone leaving no room for error. He stepped aside just enough to allow the doctor access, but remained within arm's reach of Elena, his eyes tracking every movement of the stethoscope.
Dr. Campbell checked Elena’s vitals, took her blood pressure, and used a portable Doppler monitor to listen to the baby's heartbeat.
Within seconds, the rhythmic, rapid *thump-thump-thump* of the fetal heartbeat filled the quiet study.
Vincent’s eyes never left the monitor. A quiet, unbreakable resolve settled over his features.
"Her blood pressure is slightly elevated due to acute stress, and she has minor bruising on her left arm from where she struck the railing," Dr. Campbell assessed, putting away the Doppler. "However, the placental barrier is intact, and the fetal heartbeat is remarkably strong. She needs bed rest, high nutrition, and absolutely zero stress for the next eight weeks. Vincent, who is this young lady?"
"She is my wife," Vincent declared without a moment's hesitation.
Dr. Campbell blinked in astonishment, while Luca, standing by the doorway, let out a slow exhale of breath.
"Vincent..." Elena whispered, her cheeks flushing. "We never legally—"
"You have been my wife in the eyes of God since the day I gave you that sapphire locket four years ago," Vincent cut in, turning to face her with absolute conviction. "The paperwork will be signed by midnight. No one in this city will ever refer to you as a maid again."
Before Elena could respond, Luca’s encrypted radio buzzed with static.
*“Boss, we have a situation at the conservatory,”* an enforcer's voice crackled through the speaker. *“Miss Sterling managed to access a landline in the gardener’s corridor. She placed a call to her father before we cut the cord.”*
Luca looked up, his expression grim. "Senator Sterling knows she's being detained."
Vincent’s expression turned to pure, chilling granite. "Did she manage to destroy any documents?"
"No, sir. We secured her laptop, three burner phones, and the rest of the steamer trunk. Our technical specialists are already decoding the drive."
Vincent nodded slowly. "Good. Tell the perimeter guards to engage full security protocols. No vehicles enter the gates without my personal biometric clearance. If the Senator sends his state troopers or his private security convoy, instruct them that stepping onto Moretti land without a federal warrant will be treated as an act of war."
"Understood, Don Vincent," Luca answered, turning on his heel to carry out the orders.
Vincent walked over to his mahogany desk, opened the top drawer, and pulled out an antique silver fountain pen alongside a set of official syndicate ledgers. He turned his attention back to Elena, whose face was pale once more.
"Are you afraid?" Vincent asked gently, walking back to the sofa.
"I’m afraid for you," Elena admitted softly. "Victoria’s family has politicians in their pocket. If you cross them—"
"Elena," Vincent interrupted, taking her chin between his thumb and forefinger, tilting her face up to meet his intense gaze. "For four years, I let the world believe I had lost my teeth because I had nothing left to protect. They mistook my grief for weakness. But you are here. My child is alive inside you."
His thumb brushed gently across her bottom lip.
