Chapter 6 - Secrets of the Fire

The grand reception hall on the first floor smelled of beeswax, polished leather, and gunpowder.

Six Moretti enforcers stood flanking the marble fireplace, their arms folded, heavy automatic sidearms concealed beneath tailored suits. At the center of the room, sitting comfortably in a high-backed burgundy leather armchair, Vincent Moretti poured two fingers of vintage scotch into a crystal tumbler. He didn't take a sip. He simply watched the amber liquid swirl against the glass.

The heavy double doors of the mansion were thrust open.

Senator Thomas Sterling marched into the room, flanked by four hulking private security contractors dressed in civilian tactical gear. Sterling was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, possessing the polished, artificial charm of a career politician who had never faced a consequence in his life.

Behind him, flanked by two female Moretti guards, Victoria was brought into the room. Her makeup was ruined, her designer silk blouse wrinkled, and her eyes were wild with a mixture of terror and triumphant malice.

"Daddy!" Victoria cried out, attempting to run toward her father.

A Moretti guard firmly held her shoulder, planting her in place.

"Take your hands off my daughter this instant!" Senator Sterling roared, his booming voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He stepped toward Vincent, brandishing a crisp legal document bearing the seal of the Federal District Court. "Moretti, you have crossed a line you cannot walk back from! You are unlawfully detaining a United States Senator's daughter! I have a federal injunction, and three squads of State Police are staged five miles out waiting for my phone call!"

Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't even look up from his glass.

"Tell your men to lower their hands from their holsters, Thomas," Vincent said calmly. "Or they will die before the echo of your voice fades."

The Senator laughed, a harsh, dismissive bark. "Do you think you can intimidate me? I built the judicial committee that shields your shipping docks from inspection! Without my family, the Moretti syndicate would have been indicted by the Southern District four years ago! You owe your entire empire to my protection!"

Vincent slowly set his glass down on the mahogany side table.

He rose to his feet.

The sheer predatory presence of the mafia boss caused the Senator’s lead security contractor to subtly shift his weight, his hand twitching near his sidearm.

"Four years ago," Vincent began, his voice dangerously soft, "I believed that my father had brokered a marriage between our families out of strategic necessity. I believed that you were an honorable partner in an ugly business. I even believed that Victoria was an innocent victim of the violence that consumes our world."

He picked up the Manila folder lying on the table and tossed it casually onto the glass coffee table between them.

The folder spilled open, scattering photographs, wire transfers, and arson reports across the glass.

Senator Sterling’s face froze. The arrogant color drained from his skin, leaving him looking ancient and hollow.

"What is this?" the Senator stammered.

"Those are the bank accounts you used to funnel two million dollars to my cousin Dario," Vincent said, stepping forward. "Those are the surveillance transcripts of your daughter orchestrating the assassination of Elena Vance at my lake house. And those are the medical records from the Swiss facility where Victoria kept Elena imprisoned under forged names, using her sister’s cancer treatments as leverage to keep her silent."

Victoria let out a panicked scream. "Daddy, don't listen to him! It’s all fabricated! He’s protecting that disgusting pregnant maid! She’s the one who set this up!"

"Shut up, Victoria!" the Senator snapped, his hands beginning to shake. He looked up at Vincent, realizing the trap had completely closed. "Moretti... listen to me. Dario was a rogue element. He approached us! He threatened my campaign! We did what was necessary to protect our family's future—"

"You tried to burn my heart out of my chest," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper that made the hair on the back of the contractors' necks stand up. "You stole four years of my life. You made the woman carrying my heir live as a servant in the house she was meant to rule as Queen."

Vincent raised his right hand.

In a fraction of a second, the four corners of the reception hall erupted in motion. Moretti enforcers stepped from the shadowed alcoves, raising silenced submachine guns directly at the heads of the Senator’s four private contractors.

"Drop your weapons," Luca ordered from the doorway, his own weapon aimed at the lead contractor's chest. "Now."

The contractors, recognizing the tactical suicide of their position, immediately unholstered their firearms and tossed them onto the marble floor, raising their hands in surrender.

"You're making a mistake, Vincent," Senator Sterling gasped, backing away toward the foyer. "You kill a sitting Senator, and the federal government will rain fire down upon every Moretti business from Boston to Miami!"

"I am not going to kill you, Thomas," Vincent replied with a grim, chilling smirk. "A bullet is far too merciful for a man of your stature."

Vincent gestured to Luca.

"Twenty minutes ago, copies of these documents, along with twelve years of offshore money-laundering ledgers from your campaign trusts, were delivered directly to the Attorney General's desk and the editorial board of the *New York Times*. By morning, every television network in the free world will broadcast your face as a traitor and a conspirator to murder."

The Senator’s eyes widened in sheer, suffocating horror. His entire political dynasty, his wealth, his legacy—dismantled without a single shot fired.

"No... you can't... Vincent, please!" Sterling begged, falling to his knees.

"Remove them," Vincent ordered coldly. "Turn the Senator and his daughter over to the federal marshals waiting outside the front gates. Let them spend the rest of their lives behind the bars of a maximum-security penitentiary."

Victoria screamed, kicking and clawing as the guards seized her. "Vincent! You can't do this! I loved you! I did it for you!"

May you like

Vincent turned his back on her, walking toward the grand staircase without sparing her a single backward glance.
