Chapter 7 - The Abduction Attempt

The dawn brought a heavy, gray rain that washed over the expansive grounds of the Moretti estate.

News broadcasts flickered continuously on the television in Vincent’s private library. The headlines were deafening: *SENATOR STERLING ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CONSPIRACY PROBE; DAUGHTER CHARGED IN FOUR-YEAR-OLD ARSON ATTEMPT.*

The immediate threat of political ruin had vanished, but the underbelly of the syndicate was never completely dormant.

Upstairs in the nursery wing—a sunlit set of rooms that had been frantically cleaned, painted in soft tones of cream and sky blue, and filled with handcrafted oak cribs and plush toys—Elena stood by the tall arched window. She wore a soft lavender maternity dress, her hands gently resting over her swollen belly.

The baby was active today, kicking vigorously against her ribs. For the first time in four years, the crushing weight of terror had lifted from her chest.

She turned as the door opened. Vincent walked in, carrying a small velvet box.

He looked tired, the shadows under his eyes speaking of three sleepless days spent dismantling the Sterling network and securing the syndicate’s borders. Yet, when his eyes landed on Elena, every line of exhaustion on his face softened.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, walking over and placing a warm hand over hers on her stomach.

"He won't stop moving," Elena said with a small, genuine smile. "I think he knows his father is a terrifying man, so he's trying to impress you."

A rare, quiet chuckle escaped Vincent’s chest. "He doesn't need to impress me. He is already everything to me."

He opened the velvet box in his hands.

Inside lay the Moretti St. Jude platinum locket, cleaned and polished until it sparkled like a star, beside a simple, breathtaking platinum band set with a flawless cushion-cut diamond.

"This belonged to my mother," Vincent said, lifting the locket from its bed. "And this ring belongs to my wife."

Elena’s eyes welled with tears as Vincent stepped behind her, carefully fastening the heavy platinum chain around her neck. The cold teardrop sapphires rested against her collarbone, warm against her skin.

He then took her left hand, gently sliding the diamond band onto her ring finger. It was an exact fit.

"Vincent... it's too much," she whispered, turning to face him.

"It is not enough," he answered fiercely, cupping her cheeks with both hands. "I owe you a lifetime of peace. A lifetime of happiness. And I will burn the world to the ground before I let anyone threaten that again."

Suddenly, the estate's internal alarm blared—a harsh, rhythmic siren that bathed the hallway outside in flashing red emergency lights.

Vincent reacted instantly. He pulled Elena behind him, drawing a custom .45 caliber pistol from beneath his jacket, his thumb clicking the safety off with practiced ease.

"Stay behind me," he ordered, his voice shifting back into tactical steel.

The nursery door burst open.

Luca ran in, his weapon drawn, a deep graze bleeding along his temple. "Vincent! We have a breach! Two vehicles bypassed the rear service gate—contractors loyal to Dario’s old faction who weren't rounded up! They’re inside the west wing!"

The sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the lower levels of the mansion, followed by the shattering of glass.

"They aren't here to negotiate," Luca shouted over the alarms. "They know the Sterling ship is sinking, and they want leverage. They're coming for Elena!"

Vincent’s eyes blazed with a terrifying, primal fury. "Secure the emergency vault in the basement. Get Elena down the service elevator."

"No!" Elena cried, gripping Vincent’s arm with fierce strength. "I'm not leaving you, Vincent! Last time I left your side, we lost four years! I won't lose you again!"

Before Vincent could answer, two men in black tactical gear appeared at the end of the nursery hallway, raising assault rifles.

"Down!" Vincent roared.

He shoved Elena safely behind the reinforced oak wall of the nursery closet, stepping directly into the line of fire. Vincent fired three rapid, pinpoint shots. The first mercenary collapsed instantly, while the second scrambled for cover behind the marble statues in the corridor.

"Luca, clear the flank!" Vincent commanded, advancing down the hallway with lethal precision, using the estate’s archways as tactical cover.

A spray of bullets tore through the plaster walls, showering the carpet in dust. Elena crouched inside the walk-in closet, her heart hammering against her ribs, her hands shielding her unborn child.

*Crack!*

Vincent fired twice more. A heavy body hit the floor with a final, wet thud.

Silence descended upon the nursery corridor once again, broken only by the wail of the sirens and the heavy, ragged breathing of the men.

Vincent walked back into the nursery, his weapon lowered, checking the corners with icy efficiency. "Luca, status."

"Perimeter is clear, boss," Luca’s voice came over the radio. "The remaining three hostiles were neutralized by the garden team. It’s over."

Vincent hurried to the closet door, dropping to his knees. "Elena. It’s safe. It’s over."

Elena crawled forward, trembling, collapsing into his waiting embrace. Vincent wrapped his arms around her tightly, burying his face into her hair, whispering prayers in Italian against her skin.

Then, Elena gasped, a sharp, breathless cry tearing from her lips.

Her hands gripped Vincent’s shoulders with white-hot intensity as a sudden, violent wave of pain ripped through her abdomen.

She looked down in horror.

A clear puddle of water was spreading across the hardwood floor beneath her dress.

"Vincent..." Elena whispered, her face pale as snow. "My water broke. The baby is coming. Now."
