Chapter 8 - Blood and Retribution

"Clear the route!" Vincent bellowed, his voice echoing through the grand corridors as he carried Elena down the stairs in a dead sprint. "I want every traffic light between this estate and St. Jude's Medical Center cleared by syndicate units! Now!"

The mansion was a hive of controlled chaos. While clean-up crews secured the grounds and detained the remaining compromised staff, four black armored SUVs were already idling at the front entrance, their engines roaring like thunder.

Dr. Campbell met them at the double doors, medical bag in hand, his face pale but determined. "Her water broke prematurely due to the trauma of the firefight. She's only thirty-one weeks along! We cannot deliver this baby in the estate; he will need neonatal intensive care immediately!"

"He will have whatever he needs," Vincent snarled, placing Elena into the reinforced back seat of the custom SUV. He climbed in beside her, pulling her head onto his lap, barking orders through the internal radio. "Move! Go, go, go!"

The convoy tore down the private driveway, the heavy iron gates swinging open just in time for the tires to screech onto the wet asphalt of the highway.

Outside, the rain fell in blinding sheets. Inside the vehicle, the only sound was Elena’s ragged, agonizing gasps as another powerful contraction seized her body.

"Vincent... it hurts... it's too early," Elena wept, her fingers digging into his forearm so hard her nails drew blood through his shirt. "He isn't ready. Please, God, don't let anything happen to him..."

"Look at me, Elena," Vincent commanded softly, leaning over her, his forehead resting against hers. "Look into my eyes."

She forced her tear-filled eyes open, finding the steady, unwavering gray of his gaze.

"Our son is a Moretti," Vincent said, his voice a bedrock of absolute faith. "He survived a fire. He survived the poison of our enemies. He has your strength and my blood. He will live. Do you hear me? He will live, and we will raise him together."

Elena nodded through the pain, drawing strength from the iron will of the man holding her.

Ahead of them, the road was a river of flashing blue and red lights. But these were not police cruisers—they were private security vehicles belonging to the Moretti family, blocking every intersection, cutting off civilian traffic to ensure the Don’s vehicle did not hit a single red light across the fifteen-mile stretch into Manhattan.

Fifteen minutes later, the armored SUV skidded to a halt beneath the covered ambulance bay of St. Jude's Medical Center.

A team of eight trauma surgeons, obstetricians, and pediatric specialists—summoned by Luca twenty minutes prior—stood waiting with a gurney.

The SUV doors flew open.

Vincent lifted Elena out himself, setting her gently onto the gurney. The medical team immediately swarmed her, hooking up monitors and wheeling her at a sprint through the double doors toward the emergency surgical theater.

Vincent walked alongside the gurney, his hand locked tightly around Elena’s, refusing to let go.

"Sir, you cannot enter the sterile field!" an orderly insisted, reaching out to stop him.

Vincent turned his head, casting a look so lethal that the orderly instantly pulled his hands back, stepping away in fear.

"I am not leaving my wife," Vincent said.

They burst into the delivery suite. The harsh surgical lights illuminated Elena’s pale, sweat-streaked face.

"Fetal heart rate is decelerating!" the lead surgeon announced, examining the monitors. "The umbilical cord is compressed. We cannot wait for a natural delivery. Prep her for an emergency cesarean section right now!"

"Vincent..." Elena whispered, her voice fading under the cold panic of the room.

"I’m right here, *amore mio*," Vincent murmured, donning a sterile gown and mask, leaning over the top of the operating table so she could see nothing but his eyes. He grasped her trembling hand with both of his, holding it against his cheek. "I’m not going anywhere. Hold on to me."

The surgical team worked with furious efficiency. The hum of machines, the clink of stainless steel instruments, and the sterile smell of antiseptic filled the room.

Elena closed her eyes, tears spilling onto the pillow as the anesthesia took hold.

Minutes stretched into eternity. Each second felt like an agonizing lifetime. Vincent never took his eyes off Elena’s face, murmuring continuous promises of the life they would build—the house by the ocean in Sicily, the sunlit gardens, the safety and peace he would give her.

Then, through the tension of the operating room, a sharp, distinct sound cut through the air.

A tiny, fragile, furious cry.

*Waaah!*

The room seemed to pause.

The lead pediatrician smiled beneath her mask, lifting a small, red-faced infant wrapped in sterile blankets. "We have a boy. He's small, six pounds, but his lungs are fully functional! Listen to that fight!"

Vincent froze.

The Don of the Moretti family slowly looked toward the infant. The baby kicked his tiny legs, screaming with all the fury of a survivor, his dark hair damp against his forehead.

The nurse brought the bundle over, lowering the newborn toward Elena’s chest.

Elena opened her exhausted eyes, gasping as the tiny bundle was placed against her skin. A quiet, miraculous sob broke from her chest.

Vincent leaned down, his finger touching the newborn's tiny, perfect hand. The baby’s miniature fingers immediately curled around Vincent’s massive thumb, holding on with surprising strength.

Tears fell freely down Vincent Moretti’s cheeks, washing away four years of blood, shadow, and grief.

"He's beautiful," Elena whispered, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated love. "What should we name him?"

Vincent looked at his son, then at his wife, his heart completely whole for the first time in his life.

May you like

"Leo," Vincent said softly. "Leo Moretti. Because he is a lion who survived the fire."
