Chapter 5 - The Sterling Betrayal

By nightfall, the Moretti estate had transformed into an impenetrable fortress.
High-powered floodlights illuminated the manicured lawns, casting sharp white beams across the perimeter fences. Armed guards in dark tactical gear patrolled the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs. The quiet, opulent estate now hummed with the electric tension of an impending war.
Inside the master suite—a sprawling, luxurious room that Vincent had ordered redecorated within hours to accommodate Elena—she sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows, wearing a soft silk robe Vincent had ordered from the city’s finest boutique. A tray of roasted chicken, steamed vegetables, and fresh fruit sat on the bedside table, untouched.
Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, an unlit cigar between his fingers, his eyes scanning the long, winding private driveway that led through the gated forest.
The heavy oak doors of the bedroom opened quietly, and Luca entered, carrying a thick leather dossier.
"Vincent," Luca said, keeping his voice down so as not to disturb Elena. "The technical team finished cracking Victoria's encrypted drive. It's worse than we anticipated."
Vincent turned, his cold gaze piercing. "Speak."
Elena sat up straighter, pulling the covers to her chest. "Luca, what did she do?"
Luca glanced at Elena with a look of deep sympathy before opening the folder. "The fire four years ago wasn't just an attempt to get rid of Elena to secure a political marriage. Victoria was working alongside your late cousin, Dario Moretti."
Vincent’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Dario died two years ago in an ambush in Boston."
"An ambush orchestrated by the Sterlings to silence him," Luca corrected, pulling out printouts of encrypted communications and offshore bank statements. "Four years ago, your father was preparing to hand the entire syndicate leadership to you, Vincent. Dario was furious. He went to Senator Sterling, Victoria’s father. Together, they plotted to assassinate you at the lakeside cabin. Victoria’s role was to monitor your schedule."
Luca stepped forward, handing a printed email to Vincent.
"Elena was at the cabin alone that weekend waiting for you to finish business in Manhattan. Victoria realized that if Elena died in an 'accidental' gas explosion, it would mentally break you, leaving the Moretti leadership unstable. They planned to eliminate Elena, force you into a marriage with Victoria to steady the syndicate with political protection, and then slowly poison you over a period of three years, allowing Dario to inherit the empire with Victoria as the widow."
Vincent read the cold, calculated words on the paper. The timestamps, the transaction numbers, the exact dollar amounts paid to the arsonist who had set the fuel line to the cabin's furnace.
Elena let out a stifled sob, pressing her palms against her eyes. "She planned it all... from the very beginning. She sat in this house, played the grieving confidante, while she knew she had burned everything I owned."
"She didn't burn everything," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the room vibrate. "She failed."
He closed the dossier and handed it back to Luca. "Where is the Senator?"
"His convoy of three black armored SUVs just passed the outer county line," Luca replied, checking his tactical watch. "He’s traveling with a private tactical team—ex-military contractors on his payroll. He thinks he’s coming to extract his daughter and dictate terms to you."
"Does he think I’m still the broken man who bowed to his political ultimatums four years ago?" Vincent asked, a terrifyingly calm smile spreading across his lips.
"He’s bringing a state court injunction demanding the release of his daughter under threat of a coordinated federal raid at sunrise," Luca added.
Vincent walked over to the bedside. He leaned down, placing a tender kiss on Elena’s forehead, lingering there for several long seconds until she relaxed against his touch.
"Eat your dinner, *mia cara*," Vincent whispered against her temple. "Rest. When I return to this room, the Sterling family will no longer exist in this city."
"Vincent, please be careful," Elena pleaded, her fingers clutching his lapel. "Don't throw your life away for vengeance. Our baby needs his father."
Vincent took her hand, kissing her knuckles one by one. "I am not fighting for vengeance anymore, Elena. I am fighting for our family. And that makes me invincible."
He stood, buttoned his tailored suit jacket, and looked at Luca.

"Bring the Senator to the main reception hall," Vincent commanded. "Let us show our esteemed guest how the Moretti family welcomes traitors."
