Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

The annual board of directors meeting at St. Jude’s Memorial was supposed to be Julian Thorne’s coronation.
The agenda was simple: the board would vote to expand Julian’s administrative control, approving a thirty-million-dollar expansion of his private surgical wing. Julian sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, wearing his most sorrowful, stoic expression, playing the role of the grieving husband holding the hospital together amid personal tragedy.
"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Julian said, his voice dripping with melancholy. "Despite the heartbreak regarding my wife's disappearance, our work must go on. St. Jude’s must remain a beacon of healing."
Several board members nodded sympathetically, murmuring their support.
"Before we vote," a loud, clear voice rang out from the back of the boardroom. "Perhaps the board should examine the real balance sheets."
The double doors swung open.
I walked into the room, flanked by two armed federal prosecutors and the head of the State Medical Ethics Committee.
Julian’s face went rigid. His eyes flared with a fury so hot it nearly cracked his polished mask. "Eleanor? Security! Detain this woman! She has an active warrant—"
"The warrant was dismissed two hours ago by a federal magistrate, Julian," Marcus announced, stepping into the room with thick stacks of bound files, dropping them directly onto the table before the board chairman.
"What is the meaning of this?" Chairman Harrison demanded, adjusting his spectacles.
"That," I said, pointing at the files, "is the documentation of seven years of illegal kickbacks, fabricated surgical complications, and experimental drug trials funded through phantom pediatric charities. All signed by your golden boy, Dr. Julian Thorne."
Gasps erupted around the table. Board members frantically flipped through the pages, their eyes widening at the bank receipts, forged patient consents, and offshore wire logs.
Julian stood up, slamming his fists onto the table. "This is absurd! Fabrications created by an unstable woman who abducted my wife!"
"Where is Chloe, Julian?" I asked coldly, taking a step toward him. "Tell the board what you planned for her on Friday. Tell them about Dr. Vance. Tell them about the spinal block designed to trigger respiratory arrest so you could steal her baby and lock her in an institution!"
"You have no proof of such insanity!" Julian snarled, his composure unraveling. "You have nothing!"
"We have the syringe, Julian," I said softly.
Julian’s eyes dilated.

"We took the pre-loaded vial from your study desk," I continued. "The state forensic lab just finished analyzing it. A lethal dosage of potassium chloride masked with saline. You weren't just going to drug her, Julian. You were going to murder my daughter on the operating table."
