Chapter 2 - The Sound of a Pulse

The rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of my grandchild’s heart echoed through the dim ultrasound room. The sound was pure, innocent, and completely unaware of the monsters lurking beyond the door.
Chloe lay back on the examination table, her knuckles white as she gripped the paper sheets. She kept her eyes glued to the ceiling tiles, flinching every time the technician pressed the cold wand against her rounded stomach.
"Everything looks very healthy, Mrs. Thorne," the technician said with practiced sweetness. "Strong heartbeat. Good fluid levels. Your husband must be so thrilled."
Chloe didn’t answer. She only swallowed hard, a tiny, terrified tremor running through her chin.
Before I could speak, the heavy door swung open.
Julian stepped inside. He wore his pristine white lab coat over a tailored charcoal suit, his golden hair perfectly styled, his smile radiant enough to belong on a medical school billboard. To the world, he was Dr. Julian Thorne, the benevolent prodigy running St. Jude’s Memorial. To me, he was a butcher in designer loafers.
"How are my two favorite girls doing?" Julian purred, stepping directly behind Chloe’s head.
He placed his manicured hands on Chloe’s bare shoulders. Through the thin hospital gown, his fingers dug directly into the fresh bruises beneath. Chloe’s breath hitched, a silent gasp of agony, but she forced her lips into a rigid, bloodless smile.
"Julian," I said smoothly, stepping between him and the monitor. "You took time out of your busy surgery schedule just for an ultrasound?"
His cold, pale blue eyes flicked to me. A flicker of annoyance danced across his features before dissolving into that sickeningly polished charm. "For my child, Eleanor? I would cross oceans. You know how protective I am of my family."
The subtext hung heavy in the air. *She belongs to me. Try to take her, and watch what happens.*
"Of course you are," I replied, my voice steady as stone. "A father’s love can be quite... suffocating."
Julian chuckled softly, but the warmth never reached his eyes. He leaned down, pressing his lips against Chloe’s forehead. Chloe stiffened, her eyes darting to mine, pleading for rescue.
"Rest up, sweetheart," Julian whispered into her ear, loud enough for me to hear. "I’ve already scheduled your private suite on the third floor for next week. Our personal surgical team will handle the delivery. No outside interference."
He squeezed her bruised shoulder one last time before turning toward the door. As he walked out, his polished leather boots clicked rhythmically against the linoleum.
The heavy soles. The exact pattern stamped in purple and black across my daughter’s spine.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket. The single text I had sent fifteen minutes earlier had already received a reply from a private number:
*Files acquired. The offshore shell accounts are tied directly to his surgical unit. We move on your word, Eleanor.*

I looked at Chloe, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Breathe, baby," I whispered. "He's not delivering this child. Over my dead body."
