Chapter 5 - The Evacuation

By 5:00 AM, the morning mist still clung to the city streets.

Julian had left an hour earlier for morning rounds. The moment his Mercedes cleared the underground garage gate, I shook Chloe awake.

"Mom? What time is it?" she mumbled, disoriented.

"Get up, Chloe. Put on your coat. We're leaving. Now."

She sat up, her eyes wide with terror. "Mom, no! If he catches us—he has cameras everywhere, he has security tracing my phone—"

"I know," I said, holding up her smartphone and dropping it into a glass of tap water on her nightstand. The screen flickered and died. "He’s planning to drug you on Friday, Chloe. He’s already hired the anesthesiologist to fake a medical emergency during your C-section and take the baby."

Chloe’s face drained of all color. Her hand flew to her swollen belly, her whole body shaking violently. "He... he really is going to kill me."

"Not while I have breath in my lungs," I said fiercely, pulling her up by her hands. "Grab your passport and medical records. Nothing else."

We moved swiftly down the service elevator, bypassing the front lobby where Julian’s concierge watched the exits. In the alley behind the high-rise, an unmarked black SUV was idling, exhaust puffing white into the crisp dawn air.

The driver’s door opened. A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out—Marcus Kane, a former federal prosecutor and one of my late husband’s most trusted allies.

"Eleanor," Marcus nodded, taking Chloe’s overnight bag. "Everything is set at the safehouse outside county jurisdiction."

"Did you review the drive?" I asked, helping Chloe into the back seat.

"I did," Marcus replied grimly. "Julian Thorne isn't just a monster. He’s the ringleader of a medical fraud syndicate involving millions in state subsidies. But he has deep political ties, Eleanor. The local district attorney eats dinner at his country club. If we hit him with standard charges, his lawyers will tie it up in court for years."

"Then we don't use standard charges," I said, climbing in beside my daughter. "We strike where he is most vulnerable. His arrogance."
