Chapter 3 - The Cage with Golden Bars

Julian’s penthouse was a monument to clinical perfection. Glass, polished chrome, and sterile white marble. There were no soft edges, no family photographs, no signs of warmth. It was less of a home and more of a high-security terrarium where Julian kept his prize specimen.

I stayed the night under the pretense of helping Chloe unpack baby clothes. Julian hadn’t objected; he preferred keeping an eye on both of us under his own roof.

At midnight, the penthouse fell dead silent.

I slipped out of the guest room, barefoot, moving through the shadows toward Julian’s private study. Chloe was asleep, knocked out by the sheer exhaustion of living in constant fight-or-flight mode. Julian had been called into the hospital for an "emergency consultation"—or so he claimed.

The study door was locked with a biometric keypad. Julian believed technology was infallible.

He didn't know that before I spent twenty years teaching high school literature, I spent ten years in military intelligence logistics. And he certainly didn't know that dusting a simple graphite powder over an illuminated keypad reveals the four most frequently pressed digits in seconds.

The lock clicked open.

The room smelled of expensive scotch and cedarwood. I slipped inside, pulled a encrypted flash drive from my bra, and inserted it into his desktop terminal. The software my old contacts provided worked instantly, bypassing his administrative firewalls.

Folders flickered across the screen. Patient registries. Research grants.

Then I found the hidden partition: *Project Genesis.*

My breath caught in my throat as I scanned the documents. Julian wasn’t just embezzling funds from the hospital’s pediatric ward. He was conducting unauthorized, off-label clinical drug trials on pregnant women in low-income brackets, burying adverse reactions under forged non-disclosure agreements.

And then I saw Chloe’s name.

A scheduled cesarean section for next Friday. Attached to her file was a directive signed by Julian himself:

*Subject exhibits severe post-partum psychosis indicators. Immediate sedation post-op. Child to be placed under sole custody of Dr. Julian Thorne. Maternal access: Terminated.*

He wasn’t just planning to threaten her. He was planning to drug her, declare her legally insane on the operating table, and strip her of her child forever.

Suddenly, a faint sound echoed from the corridor outside.

The heavy, measured thud of boots on hardwood.

Julian was home.
