Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Scalpel

I tackled Julian from behind, the sheer momentum throwing both of us against the metal instrument tray. Scalpels, clamps, and trays clattered violently across the floor.

Julian snarled, his elbow slamming hard into my ribs. The pain was blinding, knocking the wind from my lungs, but I refused to let go. I locked my arms around his wrist, twisting with all my weight until the syringe slipped from his fingers and shattered against the tiles.

"Die, you miserable old hag!" Julian screamed, pinning me to the floor, his hands wrapping around my throat.

His fingers squeezed. The room began to dim around the edges. I saw Chloe screaming from the bed, trying desperately to drag her laboring body over the edge to help me.

Suddenly, the shattered doors were kicked wide open.

"Federal agents! Don't move!"

Marcus and three tactical officers swarmed the room. A stun gun fired with a sharp *thwip*, the twin probes striking Julian squarely between the shoulder blades. Fifty thousand volts surged through his body. He convulsed violently, collapsing onto the floor with a heavy groan.

Within seconds, agents pinned Julian face-down, his arms wrenched behind his back into heavy steel cuffs.

"Eleanor! Are you alright?" Marcus pulled me up as emergency OB-GYN doctors rushed into the suite to attend to Chloe.

"The baby..." Chloe gasped through tears, clutching my hand as the new doctors took over. "Mom... the baby is coming!"

Ten minutes of agonizing, miraculous effort followed.

And then, a loud, defiant wail filled the delivery suite.

"It’s a girl," the lead obstetrician announced with a breathless smile, placing the tiny, crying infant onto Chloe’s chest. "A beautiful, healthy baby girl."

Chloe wept, kissing the baby's damp forehead, wrapping her arms around her newborn daughter. For the first time in nine months, my daughter smiled a genuine, radiant smile of absolute safety and peace.

Julian was hauled to his feet by two federal agents. His hair was disheveled, blood dripping from his lip, his lab coat ruined.

As they dragged him past Chloe and me, he stopped. He looked at the baby, then met my gaze.

There was no defeat in his eyes. Only a horrifying, triumphant smirk.

"You think this is over, Eleanor?" Julian whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "You think I was the one running Project Genesis?"

I narrowed my eyes. "Your signatures are on every document, Julian. You're going away for life."

Julian let out a low, chilling laugh that raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

"I was just the technician, Eleanor," he murmured softly. "The real investors... the ones who paid for your daughter's genetic profile... they own the judges, the federal bureaus, and every hospital in this state. They let me take the fall so the project could continue."

The agents shoved him forward, dragging him out into the corridor.

I stood frozen beside Chloe’s bed, the joy of the baby’s birth suddenly clouded by an icy dread.

At that exact second, the phone in my jacket pocket began to vibrate violently.

I pulled it out.

The screen displayed an incoming call from a number that was impossible. A number that had been disconnected for twelve years.

The caller ID read:

May you like

*David Vance — Deceased Husband.*

My thumb trembled over the screen as the phone continued to ring in the quiet delivery room.
