Chapter 9 - THE HEIST AT CALLAWAY TOWER

At 4:15 AM, a battered commercial laundry van backed into the underground loading dock of Callaway Tower.

The tower was under official lockdown. Two armed private security guards hired by Vance Holdings paced the dimly lit concrete bay, coffee cups in hand.

Inside the back of the laundry van, tucked beneath stacks of heavy hotel linens, sat Nathaniel and Rose.

Rose was dressed in her black catering uniform again, a cap pulled low over her eyes. Nathaniel wore dark tactical trousers and a heavy black jacket.

“Guard shift changes at 4:30,” Rose whispered, pointing toward a small gray door near the industrial trash compactors. “That door leads to the secondary utility corridor. The security keypads down here are old—they use mechanical master keys, not digital readers.”

“How do you know that?” Nathaniel asked in surprise.

“Catering staff uses that door to haul out crushed glass after galas,” Rose smiled faintly. “I spent three hours down here last month.”

Nathaniel looked at her with growing admiration. “You’re incredible, Rose.”

Her heart gave a strange, unexpected flutter, but there was no time to think about it.

“Now,” Rose whispered.

They slipped out the back of the van, moving like ghosts behind the high stacks of linen carts. Rose slid a flat brass painter's knife—stolen from the laundry van—into the latch of the utility door, popping it open with a quiet click.

They slipped inside just as the two guards turned the corner.

They descended two long flights of damp concrete stairs into the lowest subterranean level of Callaway Tower—Sub-Level 4.

The air down here was heavy with the smell of motor oil and old concrete. At the end of a long hallway stood a massive, circular steel door that looked like a 1920s bank vault.

“This is it,” Nathaniel said, stepping up to the manual mechanical wheel on the door. He began turning the combination dial—34... 88... 12... 09.

With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, the multi-ton steel door unlocked and swung open slowly.

Inside was a dust-covered room filled with floor-to-ceiling racks of analog magnetic tape reels, spinning silently behind protective glass cases.

Nathaniel walked straight to Rack 14—Terrace CCTV System.

He picked up a reel labeled REEL 08-26-A (16:00 - 17:00).

“We have it,” Nathaniel said, holding the heavy black plastic reel. “This is the raw, unedited, un-hackable visual proof of Victoria pushing my mother.”

Suddenly, the lights in the vault snapped on.

“Drop the reel, Nathaniel.”

Nathaniel and Rose whipped around.

Standing in the vault doorway was Victoria Vance, holding a silver 9mm pistol, flanked by three heavy security operatives. Her white suit was immaculate, her eyes filled with a cold, desperate insanity.

“Did you really think my mother wouldn't monitor your father’s old vault records?” Victoria sneered, stepping into the room, her heels clicking loudly against the concrete. “We knew about this backup the moment we bought your chief engineer.”

Nathaniel stepped in front of Rose, shielding her entirely. “It’s over, Victoria. Put the gun down.”

“It’s not over!” Victoria screamed, her voice echoing frantically in the small vault. “If that tape disappears, I get fifty percent of Callaway Enterprises in the divorce settlement! I’m taking everything your father built!”

She raised the pistol, aiming directly at Nathaniel’s chest. “Give me the tape.”

Rose’s mind raced. She looked down at the concrete floor near her feet. Passing through the room was a heavy high-voltage power conduit for the building’s primary HVAC system, connected to a red emergency shutoff lever right beside her hip.

Victoria tightened her finger on the trigger. “I’m sorry, Nathaniel. I really did want to love you.”

Rose didn't hesitate. She threw her entire body weight against the red emergency lever.

KA-THUNK!

A massive arc of electrical blue sparks exploded from the conduit wall! A deafening pop filled the vault as fifty thousand volts shorted out, plunging the Sub-Level into pitch-black darkness, followed immediately by the roaring cascade of the automated fire suppression sprinklers!

BANG!

Victoria’s gun discharged wildly into the ceiling, the muzzle flash illuminating her panicked face for a fraction of a second.

In the blinding dark, Nathaniel didn't run. He lunged forward, grabbed Victoria’s wrist, twisted it upward, and slammed her against the concrete wall, disarming her in a single second.

Rose grabbed the heavy steel tape reel off the desk, shoved her way past the disoriented guards in the dark, and screamed, “NATHANIEL! THIS WAY!”

May you like

Nathaniel swept Victoria’s legs out from under her, sending her crashing into her own guards, and sprinted out of the vault right behind Rose.

They slammed the heavy multi-ton steel vault door shut, turned the mechanical wheel lock, and sealed Victoria and her team inside Sub-Level 4.
