Chapter 7 - THE REVELATION AT NEW YORK-PRESYBTERIAN

At 2:30 AM, the private medical wing of New York-Presbyterian was eerie and dead quiet.
Nathaniel used a doctor’s keycard he’d secured months ago during a major financial donation to the hospital’s wing to bypass the front security desk. He led Rose down a carpeted corridor to Room 804.
Inside, Eleanor Callaway was awake.
She was sitting up in bed, looking small, fragile, and years older than her seventy years. A single nightlight illuminated her face.
When the door opened and Nathaniel walked in with Rose—both covered in rain, glass dust, and blood-soaked bandages—Eleanor gasped.
“Nathaniel! My God, what happened to you?”
“Victoria’s men attacked the Tribeca penthouse, Mother,” Nathaniel said, walking directly to the foot of her bed. “They tried to destroy the recording.”
Eleanor went completely rigid. “The... the recording?”
“Rose found it on the terrace,” Nathaniel said, pointing toward Rose, who stood quietly near the door. “I listened to it, Mother. I heard Victoria threating you about the Guernsey accounts.”
Eleanor closed her eyes, two large tears rolling down her wrinkled cheeks. “I’m sorry, Nathaniel... I’m so sorry...”
“Is it true?” Nathaniel asked, his voice shaking with a son’s heartbreak. “Did you move forty million dollars out of the company?”
“Not for myself!” Eleanor sobbed, reaching out her trembling, bruised hands. “It was for you, Nathaniel! Five years ago, before your father died, he made a terrible mistake. He took a dark loan from Vance Holdings to save our European operations. Evelyn Vance had leverage over our entire family! Victoria didn't fall in love with you, Nathaniel—her mother assigned her to marry you so they could absorb Callaway Enterprises from the inside!”
Rose listened from the doorway, the massive puzzle finally snapping together.
Victoria wasn't just a greedy bride. She was the tip of a spear wielded by her mother, Evelyn Vance, to execute a hostile corporate takeover disguised as a society wedding.
“I found out about it last month,” Eleanor continued, her voice weak. “I started moving assets into a private trust in Guernsey so that when Victoria signed the prenup, she wouldn't be able to touch the core reserves. She realized what I was doing on the morning of the wedding. When we were on the terrace, she demanded I sign the transfer authorization right there...”
“And when you refused,” Rose spoke up softly, stepping closer to the bed, “she tried to take the recorder from you.”
Eleanor looked at Rose, her eyes swimming with profound gratitude. “She grabbed my dress. She pushed me backward over the rail... If you hadn't caught me, my dear... I would be dead, and Victoria would be weeping at my funeral as the new mistress of Callaway Enterprises.”
Suddenly, the television on the wall, set to a low-volume news channel, flashed a breaking news banner:
SPECIAL REPORT: VICTORIA VANCE RELEASED FROM CUSTODY ON $10 MILLION BAIL. ALL CHARGES DROPPED DUE TO LACK OF EVIDENCE.
Nathaniel turned to the TV screen in disbelief.
On the screen, Victoria Vance was stepping out of the courthouse in a clean white suit, surrounded by her high-powered legal team.
Her attorney was speaking into a cluster of microphones: “My client has been completely exonerated. The NYPD has confirmed that all security footage from the terrace was corrupted due to a technical glitch. Furthermore, the single eyewitness—a catering temporary worker named Rose Danvers—has fled the city after accepting a massive bribe from unknown parties. We are filing a civil suit against the Callaway family effective immediately.”
Nathaniel turned his head slowly toward Rose.

They were framing Rose.
They were turning the girl who saved Eleanor’s life into the scapegoat who destroyed the evidence.
