Chapter 5 - DARKNESS IN TRIBECA

The sudden darkness was absolute. High above the city, the floor-to-ceiling windows provided only the faint, ominous orange glow of the Manhattan streetlights eighty stories below.

“Nathaniel?” Rose called out, her heart slamming against her chest.

“Stay where you are, Rose,” Nathaniel’s sharp command cut through the gloom. He moved with the quiet grace of a man who knew every inch of his space.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the doorway—the emergency lockdown magnetic deadbolts engaging.

“Did the power grid fail?” Rose asked, taking a hesitant step toward his voice.

“No,” Nathaniel said, his form appearing beside her in the dark. He held his phone, its screen illuminating his grim features. “The backup generator should have kicked in within three seconds. Someone severed the primary line from the basement junction box.”

His phone screen lit up with a notification: SECURITY SYSTEM OFFLINE. BACKUP BATTERY AT 12%.

Then came a sound that made Rose’s blood run cold.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

It was the electronic keypad at the private elevator doors. Someone was overriding the security clearance from the inside shaft.

“They’re coming up,” Nathaniel said, grabbing Rose by her arm. “The service staircase. Move!”

He led her down the dark corridor toward the back of the penthouse. They slipped into his private study just as the heavy glass doors of the main elevator hissed open out in the foyer.

Nathaniel closed the study door silently, turning a heavy brass lock. He pulled Rose into a hidden recess behind a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf—a panic space built into the concrete core of the building.

Through a tiny gap in the door, Rose watched.

Three men stepped into the living room. They wore black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and carried heavy leather duffel bags. They didn't look like police officers or amateur thugs. They moved with military precision.

“Find the drive,” one of them ordered in a low, thick foreign accent. “The girl and Callaway are inside. If they resist, clear the floor.”

Rose gasped softly, clutching Nathaniel’s arm. His muscles were like iron. He pressed a single finger against her lips, his dark eyes glowing in the shadow.

The men spread out. One walked straight toward the computer desk where Nathaniel had just played the audio recording. He unzipped his bag, pulled out a handheld hardware cloner, and plugged it directly into the server unit beneath the desk.

“They aren't here for us,” Rose whispered directly against Nathaniel’s ear. “They’re wiping the audio file!”

“They’re here to clean up Victoria’s mess,” Nathaniel whispered back, his breath warm against her temple. “That’s Vance’s private security contractors.”

Suddenly, the leader of the men stopped near the bar cart. He looked down at the floor.

He reached down and picked up something off the dark rug.

A single strip of white medical gauze—dropped from Rose’s bandaged hand when the lights went out.

The man’s head snapped toward the locked study door.

“In the office,” he said, drawing a suppressed handgun from his side holster. “Clear it.”
