Chapter 8 - THE SCAPEGOAT

“They’re going to arrest you, Rose,” Nathaniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Evelyn Vance owns three district judges in this city. By morning, an arrest warrant will be issued for you for obstruction of justice and grand larceny.”

Rose felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. “I didn't take any money! I ran away because Evelyn threatened me!”

“It doesn't matter to the media,” Nathaniel said, pacing the room like a caged panther. “They have the narrative. A poor maid tries to extort a wealthy family, fails, and runs.”

“What do we do?” Rose asked, her tears finally breaking through. “I can’t go to prison, Mr. Callaway! I didn't do anything wrong!”

Nathaniel stopped pacing. He walked straight up to Rose, grabbed her by her shoulders, and looked deep into her eyes with an intensity that took her breath away.

“Listen to me, Rose. I will not let them touch a single hair on your head. Do you hear me? You saved my mother. You saved my family. I am going to protect you if it costs me everything I own.”

“How?” she sobbed.

“We stop playing by their rules,” Nathaniel said grimly. “They wiped the server at Callaway Tower, but they forgot one thing.”

He looked over at his mother. “The server in the basement of Callaway Tower has an off-site physical backup vault built by my father in 1998—a completely analog tape backup system that records continuously on closed-circuit magnetic reels. It isn't connected to the cloud. It isn't connected to the internet. Nobody knows it exists except me and the chief engineer.”

“The footage of the push...” Rose breathed. “It’s on those tapes!”

“Yes,” Nathaniel said. “The tape from 4:00 PM today is sitting in a steel vault in the basement of Callaway Tower right now. But Vance’s security team has locked down the building under a court order.”

“Then we break in,” Rose said instantly, wiping her tears away with the back of her bruised hand.

Nathaniel stared at her, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. “You want to break into my own tower?”

“It’s not breaking in if you own the building,” Rose said, her fear hardening into cold determination. “And I know the catering staff routes, the service elevators, and the trash chute access better than any security team.”

Eleanor reached out from her hospital bed, clutching Rose’s hand. “Be careful, child. Evelyn Vance is a monster when she’s cornered.”

“So am I,” Nathaniel said darkly.
