Chapter 10 - THE FINAL TRIAL AND A NEW BEGINNING

Ten hours later. The Grand Ballroom of the New York State Supreme Court in Lower Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity.

Every major news network in North America was broadcasting live.

Evelyn Vance sat at the plaintiff’s table alongside her team of high-priced lawyers, looking smug, confident, and victorious. Across the room, Detective Miller stood near the prosecution table, looking defeated as the judge prepared to read his final ruling on the dismissal of all charges against Victoria Vance.

“In light of the total destruction of digital evidence,” the judge announced, raising his gavel, “this court finds no probable cause to hold Mrs. Victoria Vance-Callaway—”

“YOUR HONOR, STOP!”

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.

Nathaniel Callaway walked down the center aisle, dressed in a sharp, dark navy suit, his face fierce and unyielding. Beside him walked Rose Danvers, holding a black leather briefcase. Behind them stepped four uniformed federal marshals.

The courtroom exploded into a frenzy of camera flashes and shocked whispers.

“Mr. Callaway!” the judge barked, banging his gavel. “You are out of order!”

“I am delivering fresh, unalterable physical evidence, Your Honor!” Nathaniel declared, his voice booming through the chamber. “I present the analog security tape from Callaway Tower, recorded on an un-hackable physical reel, witnessed and secured by Federal Marshals three hours ago!”

Evelyn Vance stood up so fast her chair fell backward. “That’s illegal! That tape is fabricated!”

“Play the tape, Your Honor,” Nathaniel demanded calmly.

A television monitor was rolled out to the center of the courtroom. The court technician mounted the magnetic reel onto an analog deck and hit play.

The high-definition video filled the screens across the courtroom.

The footage was crystal clear:

Eleanor Callaway standing near the glass rail.Victoria Vance approaching her with a look of pure rage.Victoria lunging forward, tearing at Eleanor’s hands, and violently shoving the seventy-year-old woman over the eighty-two-story railing. And then... Rose Danvers sprinting across the frame, throwing herself over the glass, and catching Eleanor’s dress with her bare hands.

Gasps swept through the courtroom like a tidal wave. Several jury members covered their mouths in horror.

Evelyn Vance turned deathly pale, collapsing back into her seat.

On the screen, the truth was unmistakable. Victoria was a attempted murderer. Rose was a hero.

The judge looked up from the screen, his face hardened into stone. He looked at the Federal Marshals standing at the back of the room.

“Arrest Victoria Vance for attempted premeditated murder,” the judge commanded sharply. “And arrest Evelyn Vance for corporate fraud, witness intimidation, and conspiracy!”

The marshals moved immediately, pinning a screaming, sobbing Evelyn Vance against the table and slapping handcuffs onto her wrists.

Outside the courtroom steps an hour later, the sun was shining bright over New York City. Hundreds of reporters waved microphones, shouting questions at Nathaniel as he walked down the marble steps.

Nathaniel ignored them all.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps, turning to face Rose, who was wearing a simple, beautiful navy dress he had bought for her that morning. Her hands were still neatly bandaged, but her eyes were clear, bright, and free of fear.

“It’s finally over,” Rose smiled softly, the cold air blowing her hair across her face. “You got your company back. Your mother is safe. And Victoria is going away for a very long time.”

“Yes,” Nathaniel said softly, stepping closer to her, ignoring the flashbulbs of fifty photographers surrounding them. “It’s over for them.”

He took her bandaged hands in his, pressing a gentle, tender kiss against her knuckles.

“What about you, Rose?” he asked, his dark eyes filled with a warmth she had never seen before. “What are you going to do now?”

“I think I’m done carrying champagne trays,” she chuckled softly.

“Good,” Nathaniel smiled, pulling a velvet document folder from his jacket. “Because as of an hour ago, Callaway Enterprises has established the Danvers Foundation for Heroism and Public Safety. You are the CEO, Rose. A full board, a fifty-million-dollar endowment, and an office on the top floor of Callaway Tower.”

Rose stared at him, her mouth opening in total shock. “Nathaniel... I... I can’t accept that!”

“You saved my family, Rose,” Nathaniel said softly, his voice full of genuine emotion. “You gave me back my life. This is just the beginning of what you deserve.”

He leaned down and kissed her softly on the cheek.

Rose looked up into the eyes of the billionaire who had lost everything on his wedding day, only to find the one thing money could never buy: truth, courage, and a love that had begun eighty-two floors above the world.

And as they walked down the street together, hand in hand through the bright afternoon light, Rose knew her life would never be the same again.
