Chapter 9 - The Penthouse Bunker

"Move!" Nathaniel roared, shoving Rose and Eleanor into the reinforced alcove of the wine storage vault as bullets ricocheted off the heavy steel doors.

Returning fire with three controlled shots from his pistol, Nathaniel forced the gunmen to take cover behind the elevator frame. Rose didn’t waste a second. Spotting an industrial fire extinguisher mounted beside the cellar entrance, she ripped the safety pin with her teeth and hurled the heavy red cylinder down the concrete corridor toward the advancing figures.

"Nathaniel! Shoot the valve!" she screamed.

Nathaniel didn't ask questions. He raised his weapon, squeezed the trigger twice, and hit the brass nozzle directly. The pressurized canister detonated in a blinding white fog of carbon dioxide and dry chemical powder, filling the narrow hall with an impenetrable screen of choking smoke.

Under the cover of the chemical cloud, Nathaniel guided Eleanor and Rose through the blast door of bay four. The sleek, bullet-resistant Maybach flared to life with a low, menacing hum.

"Override Phoenix," Nathaniel commanded as he threw Eleanor into the plush leather back seat and slid behind the steering wheel. Rose slammed the passenger door shut just as three heavy rifle rounds spider-webbed against the reinforced ballistic glass.

Nathaniel dropped the transmission into gear, slammed his foot onto the accelerator, and the heavy luxury sedan rocketed forward, obliterating the security gate in an explosion of splintered wood and metal, bursting out onto the winding mountain road overlooking the glittering skyline of Manhattan.

Forty-five minutes later, the armored car slipped into the subterranean private garage beneath the Callaway Tower in Midtown. The building was closed for the weekend, completely secured under a private biometric protocol that bypassed the main corporate grid.

Up on the 82nd floor, inside Nathaniel’s private penthouse bunker, the atmosphere was thick with tension. A private physician, sworn to lifetime non-disclosure, stitched Nathaniel’s shoulder and administered an IV to Eleanor, who was now resting under heavy sedation in the master suite.

Rose stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, looking out at the city lights. She had cleaned the soot from her cheeks, but she still wore the torn black-and-white uniform of a housemaid.

Nathaniel walked up behind her, holding two glasses of neat bourbon. He wore a fresh black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the bandage across his chest.

"Drink this," he murmured, offering a glass. "You look like you’re ready to dismantle an empire with your bare hands."

Rose took the crystal tumbler, her fingers brushing his. A subtle spark of electricity hung in the air between them, sharp and unexpected. "Your uncle won't stop with the estate. You know that, don't you?"

"I know," Nathaniel said, his jaw clenching. "My corporate counsel just notified me through an encrypted line. Richard invoked the 'Sovereign Emergency Protocol' twenty minutes ago. He told the board of directors that Eleanor had a fatal stroke and that I orchestrated a violent armed attack at the wedding before fleeing the country."

"Can he do that?"

"By midnight, if Eleanor and I do not appear in person before the global trustees to refute the claim, Richard inherits full operational control of Callaway Global and all private holding accounts," Nathaniel explained darkly. "Three billion dollars, dozens of defense contracts, and the Sterling Vault."

Rose took the silver serpent pendant from her pocket, setting it on the glass table. "The vault isn't just money, Nathaniel. My mother left an encrypted black ledger inside. It contains the names of every foreign official, corrupt judge, and shell corporation Richard used to stage his takeover fifteen years ago."

Nathaniel looked at the pendant, then into Rose’s eyes. "Then we don't run."

May you like

"No," Rose whispered, a dangerous, elegant smile touching her lips. "We take back what’s ours."
