Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Ballroom

Click.

Every light in the grand ballroom plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

Screams erupted from every corner of the room. Women shrieked, men shouted in panic, and the sound of trampling feet and overturned chairs echoed violently against the marble walls.

"Rose! Grandmother! Stay down!" Nathaniel’s voice roared over the pandemonium.

Through the blackness, Nathaniel dropped to his knees, wrapping one muscular arm protectively around his grandmother’s wheelchair and reaching out blindly with the other. His fingers caught a soft wrist—Rose. He pulled her down behind the reinforced mahogany banquet table just as a deafening sound shattered the air.

BANG!

A gunshot splintered the heavy oak doors of the main entrance.

Emergency strobe lights on the wall kicked on, bathing the chaos in eerie, rhythmic flashes of red and white. Through the flashing crimson shadows, three masked men dressed in tactical combat gear stormed into the ballroom, semi-automatic rifles raised.

"Move and you die!" one of the gunmen shouted into the crowd.

Guests dropped to the floor like stones, crawling under linens, crying and praying.

Across the room, near the private service elevators, the door burst open. Marcus was lying unconscious on the threshold, a puddle of blood pooling beneath his head. And stepping out from behind him was Vanessa Cross—freed from her zip-ties, her torn wedding gown replaced with a dark Kevlar vest, holding a Glock 19 in her gloved hand.

Walking beside her was a man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, calmly adjusting his diamond cufflinks as if strolling through a sunny park.

Nathaniel peered over the edge of the overturned table, the red emergency lights illuminating the man's cold, calculating smile.

Nathaniel’s breath caught in his throat.

"Uncle Richard," Nathaniel hissed through gritted teeth.

Richard Callaway smiled, stepping over the broken champagne flutes, completely unfazed by the screaming guests or the gunmen flanking him.

"You always were too sentimental for business, Nathaniel," Richard's voice carried smoothly across the ballroom. "You thought Victoria was the prize? She was just the distraction to get the master key out of Eleanor’s safe and onto that necklace. Bring me the cipher, Vanessa."

Vanessa raised her weapon and scanned the floor. "The old woman dropped it near the maid."

Richard turned his cold, calculating gaze directly toward the table where Nathaniel, Eleanor, and Rose were sheltered. He raised an eyebrow, spotting the hem of Rose's uniform sticking out from behind the mahogany barrier.

"Ah, the brave little maid," Richard laughed softly, raising his hand to signal his gunmen forward. "Did you really think hiding in my house as a servant would keep you safe, Rose Sterling? Your mother took something of mine fifteen years ago. And tonight, I’m collecting both debts."

Rose looked down at the silver necklace resting beside her foot among the shards of glass. Then she looked up into Nathaniel's eyes. In the blinking red emergency light, their gazes locked—and for the first time, Nathaniel saw not a helpless victim, but a partner who was ready to fight.
