Chapter 5 - The Maid with Royal Grace

Nathaniel raised his gaze to meet Rose's. For the first time that evening, he truly looked at her.

He knew her face, of course. She had been hired through an elite domestic agency three years ago to assist with Eleanor’s daily care. But to Nathaniel, domestic staff had always been background figures—polite, silent, and invisible.

Now, looking closely, he saw the fiery determination burning behind her hazel-green eyes. Her uniform was torn at the shoulder, revealing a pale skin bruised from where she had blocked the blow meant for him. A smear of blood marked her cheekbone, yet she stood with an innate, quiet elegance that put every high-society guest in the room to shame.

"Miss Rose," Nathaniel said, his voice deep and sincere. "You saved my grandmother’s life. And mine. I owe you a debt I can never repay."

"I was just doing my job, Mr. Callaway," Rose answered quietly, lowering her eyes respectfully. "Lady Eleanor has been kinder to me than anyone in my life. I couldn't let anyone hurt her."

"No, child," Eleanor interjected firmly, her strength slowly returning. "That was not just a job. That was courage. Real courage." Eleanor then winced slightly, looking down at Rose’s arm. "Nathaniel, look at her shoulder. She needs medical attention immediately."

"I’ll have Dr. Evans come up to the penthouse right away," Nathaniel said, standing up. He reached out to gently touch Rose’s arm to help her steady herself, but as he pulled back his hand, his eyes caught something hanging from her wrist.

Rose had pulled up her sleeve to wash Eleanor's wound, exposing a worn leather cord tied around her wrist. Suspended from the cord was a tarnished, vintage silver locket carved with the crest of a blooming wild rose intertwined with a phoenix.

Eleanor gasped sharply, her eyes going wide as she spotted the silver trinket. "Where did you get that?"

Rose instinctively pulled her sleeve down, a flush of embarrassment tinting her cheeks. "It was my mother's. It's the only thing she left me before she passed away."

Eleanor’s hand began to shake visibly. She looked from the locket to Nathaniel, then back to Rose, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "The Phoenix Crest of the Sterling family... Rose, what was your mother's maiden name?"

"Margaret," Rose whispered, surprised by Eleanor's intense reaction. "Margaret Sterling."

Nathaniel frowned, sensing the sudden shift in the air. "Grandmother? What are you talking about? The Sterling family lost everything fifteen years ago during the corporate hostile takeover of Sterling Logistics."

"They didn't lose it, Nathaniel," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with decades of unspoken grief. "It was stolen from them. By your own uncle, Richard Callaway. Margaret Sterling didn't disappear because she was broke. She fled Manhattan because Richard threatened to kill her daughter."

The ballroom suddenly seemed twice as cold. Rose froze, staring at Eleanor in utter bewilderment. "My mother told me we were in hiding from dangerous men... but she never told me who."

Before Eleanor could explain further, the massive crystal chandeliers overhead sputtered.

A sharp electrical snap echoed through the building.
