Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Veil

The boardroom descended into controlled chaos. Board members scrambled to the far corners as Eleanor’s loyal security team tackled the mercenaries, disarming them within seconds and pinning Richard to the blood-stained floor.
Vanessa backed away toward the private executive terrace, her eyes darting between the armed guards and the glass balcony overlooking the sheer eight-hundred-foot drop into Manhattan.
"Don't move, Vanessa," Nathaniel warned, releasing his uncle into the custody of the guards and turning his attention to his former fiancée. "It’s over. Every federal agency on the East Coast has your real identity. The real Victoria Vance is currently safe in London, and your mercenary network has been seized."
Vanessa looked at him, and to Rose's shock, the counterfeit bride began to laugh. It wasn't the sound of a defeated criminal; it was the high, hysterical laughter of someone who knew a secret nobody else understood.
"You really think Richard was the mastermind behind this, Nathaniel?" Vanessa asked, wiping a bead of sweat from her lip as the wind from the terrace whipped her blonde hair wildly. "You think your pathetic uncle had the intelligence to orchestrate a decade-long infiltration of the Callaway family?"
Rose stepped beside Nathaniel, her instincts screaming that something was terribly wrong. "What are you talking about?"
"Evelyn Sterling didn't hide that cipher from Richard," Vanessa whispered, her voice carrying a venomous chill that silenced the entire room. "She hid it from the man who hired Richard. The man who has owned Callaway Global since before your father even drew his first breath."
Eleanor’s face went chalk-white. The matriarch clutched her chest, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. "No... that’s impossible. He died forty years ago."
Suddenly, the lights across the entire 70th floor went dead.
A piercing, mechanical klaxon wailed through the darkness as the tower's emergency blast shutters began slamming shut, sealing every window with solid four-inch plates of reinforced titanium. Total blackness enveloped the boardroom.
"Nathaniel!" Rose cried out, reaching blindly into the pitch-black void.
Warm, strong hands caught her wrists, pulling her against his chest. "I’m right here, Rose. Stay behind me!"
From the center of the dark boardroom, a low, distorted voice crackled through the executive teleconference speakers—not Richard’s voice, not Vanessa’s, but a sound deep, metallic, and ancient.
"You have done well, Rose Sterling," the voice echoed, vibrating the glass and steel around them. "You brought the master key directly into the terminal, just as Evelyn promised you would. The Callaway bloodline has served its purpose."

A sudden crimson laser dot appeared on the center of Nathaniel’s chest.
Before Rose could scream, a single, muffled gunshot shattered the silence—and a warm, heavy splatter hit the silk of Rose's gown.
