Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Vault

Elena slammed the heavy oak door of the private library shut and engaged both the electronic keypad and the manual deadbolt. The sudden silence inside the room was almost jarring compared to the explosive hostility out in the hallway. High shelves lined with leather-bound volumes soared toward the vaulted ceiling, their deep wood scent offering a comforting anchor in a sea of madness.
"Shh, Leo, sweet boy. You’re okay. We’re safe," she whispered softly, unbuckling the baby from the harness and pulling him against her shoulder. The boy sniffled, his tiny fist gripping the collar of her simple gray sweater.
Elena sat down in the deep leather armchair behind Marcus’s desk, her knees trembling so badly she could hardly stand. She had worked for the Vance estate for only six months, hired under the impression that her duties were purely administrative and light childcare. But the cracks in the household's glamorous façade had appeared immediately. Victoria Vance was not just emotionally erratic; she was deeply, toxically insecure, consumed by the fear that Marcus was planning to erase her from his empire.
On the corner of the heavy mahogany desk, an iPad screen lit up.
Elena glanced over. A secure notification popped up from an encrypted messaging app:
*Sterling Legal: Police unit dispatched. Estimated ETA: 7 minutes. Evidentiary file secured. Marcus, do not let her leave the grounds with vehicle access.*
Elena swallowed hard. The machinery of immense wealth was moving. Victoria wasn’t just facing a family argument; she was facing total destruction.
Suddenly, an abrasive buzzing sound came from the master intercom panel mounted on the wall near the window. A sharp, grating voice pierced the quiet room.
May you like
"Elena! You think you’re smart, don't you?" Victoria’s voice spat through the speaker, distorted by rage. "You think Marcus cares about you? You are a pawn! A disposable prop he’s using to strip my custody! If you don't unlock that door right now, I will swear to the police that you stole half the jewelry in the master vault. I planted the receipts in your locker yesterday, you naive little rat!"
Elena froze, staring at the intercom speaker in horror.
