Chapter 2 - The Red Line Crossed

The sound of the baby’s cries vibrated through the high ceilings of the Vance manor, bouncing off the polished marble floors and imported crown molding. Elena stepped back into the shadow of an antique mahogany archway, instinctively wrapping her body around the infant carrier. Her knuckles were white, her breath shallow and uneven. Every instinct she possessed screamed at her to flee, but her feet remained rooted to the floor.

Victoria’s manicured hand hovered trembling against her cheek. The bright red imprint stood out starkly against her pale skin. Her mouth hung open, her chest heaving beneath a designer silk blouse.

"You struck me," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with pure disbelief. "In front of the help. In front of a common servant."

"Lower your voice," Marcus said. His voice was deathly quiet, devoid of the theatrical fury that defined Victoria’s tantrums, but loaded with a crushing, suffocating authority. He did not blink. His towering frame completely blocked the hallway exit, casting a long silhouette across the corridor. "You just tried to drag our infant son down a flight of stairs while kicking at a woman carrying him. You are entirely unraveling, Victoria."

"I am his mother!" she shrieked, dropping the trembling victim act instantly. Her eyes flared with venomous rage. "I have every legal right to take him wherever I damn well please! You cannot lock me out of my own nursery! You cannot give control of my flesh and blood to this… this stray!"

"You surrendered your motherly privileges the moment you stumbled into this wing reeking of gin and screaming obscenities," Marcus replied. He reached into his breast pocket and produced a sleek smartphone. He tapped the screen twice and angled it toward her.

On the high-resolution display, a live split-screen feed showed four distinct angles of the exact hallway where they stood. A flashing red icon in the upper-right corner read: *BROADCAST ACTIVE - SERVER ARCHIVE: LAW FIRM VANCE & ASSOCIATES.*

Victoria froze. The blood drained from her face, leaving her chalky and hollow-eyed.

"Every movement. Every scream. The physical assault on Elena, the reckless endangerment of our son," Marcus said evenly. "It wasn't just recorded, Victoria. It was streamed directly into Arthur Sterling’s terminal. He’s drafting the emergency restraining order as we speak."

"You set me up," Victoria gasped, backing away until her shoulder struck the wall. "You baited me! You deliberately sent her here with him to provoke me!"

"I took precautions because I know who you are when your vanity is threatened," Marcus answered. He turned his eyes to Elena. The icy demeanor softened, replaced by a subtle, urgent nod. "Elena. Take Leo into the private library. Lock the deadbolt behind you and do not open it for anyone except me."

"Yes, Mr. Vance," Elena murmured. Without waiting another second, she slipped quietly past them, clutching the carrier tightly against her chest, her sneakers squeaking softly on the polished wood as she bolted toward safety.
