Chapter 8 - The Unravelling of Richard

"The meeting is adjourned," the board secretary whispered, gathering his files and practically fleeing the room along with the rest of the executives.
Within minutes, the vast boardroom was empty, save for Claire, Jonathan, Evelyn, and Richard.
Evelyn sat motionless, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table as if unable to comprehend that her name had just been eradicated from the corporate registry.
Richard fell to his knees beside Claire’s chair. Tears streamed down his cheeks, ruining his carefully curated image of a high-society heir.
"Claire... please," he pleaded, reaching out to grasp the hem of her jacket. "I was wrong. I was terrified of my mother! She controlled everything—my trust, my allowance, my career! I had to do what she said! But I love you. I love Noah! We can fix this. We can take the company and raise our son together in the penthouse!"
Claire looked down at the man she had once promised to love until death. She felt no anger anymore. Only a profound, liberating pity.
"You didn't protect your son when he was bleeding on the stone patio, Richard," Claire said, her voice steady and ice-cold. "You didn't ask if he had broken bones. You asked about your stock price."
"I was in shock!" Richard sobbed. "Claire, please, don't divorce me! You can't take Noah away from his father!"
"Noah doesn't have a father," Claire replied, pulling an envelope from her purse and dropping it onto his lap. "He only has a coward who shares his DNA."
Richard looked down at the thick document. It was a formal complaint for divorce on the grounds of gross domestic negligence, accompanied by a request for sole legal and physical custody, and an immediate restraining order.
"Sign it," Claire said. "Or I will instruct the forensic audit team to examine your personal expense accounts from the charity foundation. Jonathan tells me there are several offshore transfers bearing your signature that the IRS would find intensely fascinating."
Richard’s mouth opened, but no words came out. He stared at the pen Claire held out to him.
Defeated, broken, and stripped of his mother's shadow, Richard took the pen with trembling fingers. On the final page, right beneath the red notarized line, he signed away every right to his son, his marriage, and his dignity.

Claire picked up the signed document, placed it neatly back into her purse, and turned her back on him forever.
