Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the 45th floor of the Vance Tower in Midtown Manhattan was engulfed in utter chaos.
Evelyn Vance sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, her face coated in thick makeup to conceal the scratches and bruises from her fall the night before. Around the table sat twelve executive board members, their faces grim, staring at television screens broadcasting the boycotts outside their flagship stores.
"It’s a minor public relations hiccup!" Evelyn snapped, slamming her bejeweled fist onto the polished wood. "The public has the attention span of a goldfish! We issue an apology, claim Claire had a postpartum breakdown, donate five million dollars to a children’s hospital, and the stock will stabilize by Friday!"
"The stock is down twelve percent, Evelyn," one senior shareholder barked. "Target and Walmart have suspended shipments of our fall line! The board is demanding your immediate resignation as Chairman!"
"I AM VANCE GLOBAL!" Evelyn roared, her veins bulging along her neck. "I built this empire! None of you have the authority to remove me!"
The double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding bang.
"Actually, Evelyn," Claire’s clear, unflinching voice echoed through the vast room, "they don't. But I do."
Every head turned.
Claire walked into the boardroom wearing a sharp, tailored black suit. Behind her walked Jonathan Vance, flanked by the head of the federal corporate fraud division and two forensic accountants.
Evelyn’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets as she saw her long-vanished brother. She gripped the arms of her leather chair, her breath catching in her throat. "J-Jonathan...? No... you can't be here..."
"Surprised to see me sister?" Jonathan said, pulling out a chair at the opposite end of the table and sitting down. "You spent thirty years pretending our father left you the crown. But fraud has a funny way of expiring when the rightful heir steps into the light."
Claire placed a leather-bound folder in front of the board’s chief legal counsel.
"As the legal and sole guardian of Noah Vance, the fourth-generation primary beneficiary under the Arthur Vance Testamentary Trust," Claire announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority, "I hold proxy ownership of sixty percent of Vance Global’s voting shares. And by the power vested in me by that charter, I call an immediate emergency shareholder vote."
The room was so quiet that the hum of the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine.
"Item one on the agenda," Claire continued, looking directly into Evelyn’s terrified eyes. "The permanent and immediate termination of Evelyn Vance from all executive, directorial, and advisory positions within Vance Global and all affiliated subsidiaries."
"You can't do this!" Richard yelled from the corner, bursting into the room. "Claire, stop this madness! You're destroying our family!"
Claire didn't even turn to look at him. She addressed the board members.
"All in favor of Evelyn Vance's removal?" Claire asked, raising her right hand.
Jonathan raised his hand. One by one, every single terrified board member, sensing the shifting tides of power, raised their hands into the air.

Evelyn slumped back into her chair, her face ash-white. Her empire, her money, her absolute authority—stripped away in less than sixty seconds by the very woman she had spent years trying to break.
