Chapter 6 - The Emergency Custody Ambush

Before Claire could even process the magnitude of Jonathan's revelation, the glass doors of the hotel lobby were shoved open.

Four men in dark suits marched in, flanked by two armed process servers. At the lead was Richard, looking frantic, accompanied by Harold Stern and a stern-faced woman carrying a court summons.

"Claire!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing across the quiet lobby. "You kidnapped my son from the hospital! You took him out against medical advice!"

"He was discharged by Dr. Martinez, Richard," Claire said coldly, standing up and stepping between the men and the elevator where Noah was being watched by Alexander’s security team. "And you know it."

Stern stepped forward, waving an expedited court order signed with an emergency red seal.

"Mrs. Vance, this is an Emergency Ex Parte Custody Order signed by Judge Harrison less than an hour ago," Stern said smoothly, a smug triumph dancing in his eyes. "Given the public disturbance, your sudden disappearance from the marital residence, and an ongoing domestic violence investigation where you have been named as a provocateur, temporary custody of Noah Vance has been awarded to his father, Richard Vance. You must surrender the child immediately."

Richard reached out, his hand shaking. "Give me Noah, Claire. If you cooperate, Mom will let you have supervised visitation once a month at the estate. Don't ruin your life completely."

Claire felt a cold panic claw at her throat. Judge Harrison was Evelyn’s longtime country-club friend. They had moved with terrifying speed, weaponizing a corrupt judge before Claire could even file an answer.

"She won't be surrendering anything, Mr. Stern," a deep, aristocratic voice rang out from the sofa.

Stern froze. His eyes shifted toward Jonathan Vance, who slowly stood to his full height.

Stern's face drained of every drop of color. The papers in his hand trembled. "J-Jonathan? That's impossible... you're dead."

"I was merely waiting for you and my sister to dig a grave deep enough to bury yourselves in," Jonathan said, stepping forward. He glanced at the process server and the court order. "Judge Harrison signed this, did he? How fascinating. Did you tell him that thirty minutes ago, federal agents raided the Manhattan Surrogate Court on an unsealed bribery indictment?"

Stern stumbled backward, his back hitting the hotel pillar. "What?"

"The New York State Attorney General has already placed an injunction on all family court proceedings involving the Vance Trust," Alexander King announced, stepping forward with his camera rolling. "Every document you are holding is legally null and void. And Richard... say hello to the live stream. There are two million people watching you try to rip a traumatized baby from his mother."

Richard whipped his head around, seeing the red recording light. He backed away, sweating through his collar. "Harold! What is he talking about?! Fix this!"

"Get in the car, Richard," Stern choked out, terrified of being captured on federal camera. "We have to leave. Now!"

As the lawyers scrambled out like frightened rats, Claire looked at Jonathan, her heart hammering. "They won't stop. Evelyn will use every weapon she has left."

May you like

"Then it's time," Jonathan said quietly, "to take the fight to her front door."
