Chapter 11 - The Knock on the Iron Gates

The sun began to dip behind the tree line, painting the sky in deep streaks of violet and gold. Noah had fallen asleep upstairs in his newly decorated bedroom, clutching his favorite plush bear, completely secure in the warmth of his home.
Downstairs, the estate was quiet. Jonathan had retired to the guest wing, and Claire stood in the vast, modern kitchen, rinsing a glass under the tap.
A sudden, sharp chime echoed through the silence.
It was the electronic monitor for the front security gates at the end of the long driveway.
Claire frowned, wiping her hands on a linen towel. Nobody was scheduled to visit at this hour. The security team Jonathan had hired was stationed at the gatehouse, but the console on the kitchen wall flickered, displaying the live video feed.
A single, unmarked vintage silver Rolls-Royce was parked just outside the iron barrier.
A tall, elderly man with snow-white hair and an impeccably tailored three-piece suit stepped out of the vehicle. He didn't look like a process server, a reporter, or a curious tourist. He carried the heavy, undeniable aura of old European royalty.
The intercom crackled to life.
"Claire Vance," a voice spoke through the speaker, low, cultured, and accented with a faint Swiss cadence. "Forgive the intrusion at this hour. But what you found in Arthur Vance’s safe was only half of the story."
Claire walked slowly toward the monitor, her heart beginning to thump unsteadily. "Who are you? The estate is closed to visitors. Leave immediately or security will escort you off the property."
The man didn't move. He held up a sealed crimson wax envelope directly toward the security camera lens. Emblazoned in the gold wax was a crest Claire had never seen before—an eagle clutching two keys above a Latin motto.
"Your father-in-law Arthur Vance was a thief, my dear," the man said softly through the speaker, his words chilling Claire to the bone. "Evelyn was cruel, yes. But she wasn't hiding Noah’s inheritance from him. She was hiding the fact that Noah is not a Vance at all."

Claire froze, the air leaving her lungs in a painful gasp.
"The true family whose bloodline you are holding," the old man continued as the silver gate's lock clicked open from an override signal within his car, "has finally come to claim what was stolen thirty years ago. Open the door, Claire... before they take him by force."
