Chapter 8 - The Cost of Betrayal

Detective Miller clicked the handcuffs around Eleanor's wrists first.
The cold metal snapped shut with a sound that seemed to shatter whatever remained of Eleanor’s sanity. "Take your hands off me! Daniel, stop them! You’re the man of this house! Do something!"
Daniel was still on his knees. He didn't move. He couldn't move. His entire reality had imploded within forty-five minutes. He had traded a trillion-dollar empire, a devoted wife, and his firstborn daughter for the approval of a venomous mother who had just dragged him into a public abyss.
"Daniel Whitmore," one of Arthur’s litigators stepped forward, looking down at him with clinical detachment. "You are hereby served with an emergency injunction. You are barred from entering any property owned, leased, or managed by Vance Global Conglomerate. You are barred from coming within five hundred feet of Vivienne Vance. Furthermore, Whitmore Architecture’s headquarters on 5th Avenue has been locked down by Vance private asset recovery. Your personal office has been cleared, and your accounts have been frozen pending a full forensic embezzlement audit."
Daniel raised his head, his eyes hollow, red-rimmed, and lifeless. "Embezzlement? I never stole from the firm!"
"You used company operational funds to finance your sister’s wedding reception," the litigator replied coolly. "Funds that were underwritten by Vance Capital bonds. That constitutes corporate fraud under Federal statute. Have your lawyer contact us—if you can afford one."
Chloe screamed and fought as the second officer handcuffed her wrists behind her back. "Julian! Julian, come back! Daniel, save me!"
Her imported lace gown snagged on the corner of a metal stanchion, tearing violently along the side seam—a poetic, brutal mirror of what she and Eleanor had done to me only an hour prior.
The guests stepped aside, parting like the Red Sea, as the two women were marched out of the grand ballroom in full view of every camera, every high-society rival, and dozens of hotel staff members who had already leaked the entire saga onto social media.
Daniel remained on the floor, sitting in the scattered wreckage of flowers, broken glass, and fake diamonds.
Arthur turned to me, his demeanor softening completely. "Come, sweetheart. Your car is waiting. Let’s get you and my granddaughter home."
I took one final look at Daniel.

He looked up at me, his lips trembling, whispering my name like a prayer that would never be answered.
I didn't say a single word. I simply turned my back, took my father’s arm, and walked away.
