Chapter 11 - The Unforeseen Shadow

The cold glass of the balcony door clicked softly as someone stepped out behind me.

I turned, expecting Marcus Sterling or my father’s head of security.

Instead, a young courier in an unmarked black courier uniform stood near the doorway, holding a thick, wax-sealed silver envelope.

"Mrs. Vance?" the courier asked quietly.

I frowned, my hand instinctively resting defensively over my belly. "How did you get up here? This balcony is restricted to Vance executive personnel."

"I was instructed to deliver this directly to your hands, ma'am," the courier said, his voice entirely devoid of nervousness. "From an interested third party."

He stepped forward, placed the heavy envelope onto the small marble bistro table between us, turned sharply on his heel, and walked back inside the bustling atrium before I could call for security.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs with an inexplicable, instinctive dread.

I approached the table slowly. The envelope was heavy, made of vintage textured linen paper. The wax seal was not the griffin of the Vance family, nor was it the generic stamp of a corporate firm.

It was a seal bearing a crest I had never seen before: a serpent coiled around a broken crown.

With trembling fingers, I broke the wax and slid out the contents.

Inside was a single black-and-white photograph, taken only hours ago. It was a surveillance shot of Daniel Whitmore sitting in a dimly lit diner in Newark. But he wasn't alone.

Sitting across from him was a woman with striking, ice-blue eyes, wearing a diamond signet ring that bore the exact same coiled-serpent crest as the wax seal.

Beneath the photograph was a handwritten letter written in elegant, razor-sharp cursive:

*My dearest Vivienne,*

*You broke the Whitmores like cheap glass, and for that, they certainly deserved it. Eleanor was an arrogant fool, and Daniel was a spineless coward who never understood the real game being played around him.*

*But while you were busy destroying them, you forgot to ask one very important question: Who do you think financed Daniel's secret offshore gambling debts in the first place? Who do you think orchestrated his meeting with you at that clinic three years ago?*

*Daniel didn't marry you by accident, little Vance heiress. He was a pawn sent to infiltrate your father’s fortress.*

*And now that Daniel has failed, the board belongs to me.*

*Enjoy the gala tonight. Because the child you are carrying does not just carry Arthur Vance's bloodline.*

*She carries mine.*

*See you in the delivery room.*

*— Victoria Sterling-Vance.*

My breath caught in my throat. The paper slipped from my numb fingers, fluttering in the icy winter wind.

Suddenly, the lights across the entire seventy-story Vance Tower flickered once, twice—and plunged Manhattan into pitch-black darkness.
