Chapter 3 - The Exposed Plot

A collective gasp rippled across the four hundred guests.
Chloe stepped back, her heel catching on the hem of her train. "That’s impossible," she stammered, pointing a manicured, trembling finger at me. "She’s an orphan schoolteacher! Daniel met her at a community clinic! She doesn't even own a designer handbag! She’s a parasite!"
"Enough, Chloe!" Daniel whispered, his chest heaving as panic seized him. He turned to me, his hands shaking violently as he tried to reach for my arm. "Vivienne... Viv, what is he talking about? You told me your father was an antique restorer from upstate..."
I pulled back before his fingers could graze my skin. The fabric of my dress hung in tatters around my shoulder where Eleanor had ripped it. My ribs still ached with the memory of Eleanor's pointed shoe nearly striking my unborn baby.
"My father restores estates, Daniel," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all the softness he had taken for granted over our three years together. "Entire towns, actually. And I never lied to you. You simply never cared enough to ask a second question once you assumed I had nothing to offer."
"She’s bluffing!" Eleanor’s shrill voice cut through the air, though the tremor in her throat betrayed her terror. "She orchestrated this! She stole the ring! The security cameras will prove it! Look in her bag, Marcus! The police will find our diamond!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He raised a two-way radio to his lips. "Control room. Feed to the main projection screens. Now."
Above the grand stage, the towering fifty-foot high-definition screens—originally set up to broadcast Chloe's lavish bridal montage—flickered. The romantic background music died abruptly, replaced by the crisp, high-definition security feed of the reception lobby outside the powder rooms from forty-five minutes earlier.
The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence.
On screen, Chloe appeared, looking anxiously over both shoulders. She walked briskly to the coat-check station where my clutch had been placed while I assisted an elderly guest. With deliberate, practiced precision, Chloe unzipped my bag, slid a heavy platinum box inside, and zipped it back up. Then, the footage cut to the powder room mirror, capturing Eleanor whispering to Chloe: *Make sure you scream loud enough before the main toast. I want her utterly broken before she can announce this ridiculous pregnancy.*
The audio from the hotel’s state-of-the-art surveillance picked up every single syllable.
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Daniel slowly turned his head toward his sister and mother. His face was gray. "You... you set her up?"

"Daniel, darling, she was dragging our family name down!" Eleanor blurted, her composure completely shattering as she saw the looks of disgust from the city's business elite. "She isn't one of us! I had to protect you!"
"You didn't protect anything, Eleanor," I said quietly, clutching the ultrasound photo tightly against my heart. "You just guaranteed the end of everything you hold dear."
