Chapter 6 - Blood and Ink

Arthur gestured slightly with his fingers. One of the litigators stepped forward, opened a slim briefcase, and pulled out a stack of pristine parchment documents stamped with state judicial seals.
He handed them directly to me.
I looked down at the header: *PETITION FOR IMMEDIATE DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND SOLE LEGAL AND PHYSICAL CUSTODY.*
"Vivienne, no..." Daniel gasped, looking up from the floor, tears cutting muddy tracks through his foundation makeup. "Please, don't do this. We can talk about this in private. Think of our child! A child needs her father!"
"A father?" I laughed, the sound hollow and sharp. "A father who stood by while his mother kicked an ultrasound photograph across the floor? A father who stayed silent while his sister called the mother of his child a parasite?"
I took the fountain pen Arthur offered me.
Without leaning on a table, resting the papers against the mahogany podium that had been prepared for Chloe's wedding toasts, I signed my name across every signature line. The ink dried instantly under the hot chandelier lights.
"You won't get a single penny, Daniel," I said, handing the papers back to the lead attorney. "Not from me. Not from my father. And certainly not from your family's firm, because by tomorrow morning, Whitmore Architecture will be placed under federal receivership."
"You can't do that!" Chloe screamed, hyperventilating as she clung to Eleanor's skirt. "Our family has a reputation! My fiancé is an heir to the Montgomery trust! If you ruin us, his family will cancel the wedding!"
At that exact moment, a tall, broad-shouldered man in a bespoke tuxedo standing near the VIP tables cleared his throat.
It was Julian Montgomery—Chloe's fiancé.
Julian unpinned the white rose boutonnière from his lapel and dropped it casually into a half-empty champagne glass.
"The wedding is already canceled, Chloe," Julian said in a flat, disgusted voice that carried across the entire room. "My family does not associate with common criminals or bankrupt fraudsters. Thank you for showing your true colors before I signed a prenuptial agreement."

Julian turned on his heel and walked straight out of the locked ballroom, the security guards opening the doors just wide enough to let him pass.
Chloe shrieked, a raw, guttural sound of pure panic, and collapsed onto the floor in a heap of useless silk.
