Chapter 4 - The Freeze

Before Eleanor could scream another denial, a symphony of chimes and alert tones shattered the room.

It didn't come from one phone. It came from dozens.

Eleanor's phone buzzed violently in her clutch. Chloe's phone flashed red on the sweetheart table. And in Daniel's pocket, his device hummed without stopping.

Daniel pulled out his phone, his thumb trembling as he unlocked the screen. "What is this...?" he muttered, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "The financing for the waterfront civic center... rescinded? The Whitmore Group's primary credit facility... canceled for breach of ethics clause?"

"Look at your emails, Daniel," I murmured, watching the sweat bead on his forehead.

"No, no, no," Daniel groaned, frantically swiping through his screen. "Whitmore Architecture's commercial license is under audit? The Board of Commissioners just pulled our bid on the harbor district? That project was eighty percent of our annual revenue! We’re over-leveraged by twenty-two million dollars!"

Eleanor violently snatched her phone from her purse. Her eyes widened until the whites showed completely. "My cards... my black card was declined? The boutique jeweler in Paris just recalled my pending consignment? What is happening?!"

"Your assets were leveraged against Vance subsidiary holdings, Mrs. Whitmore," Marcus explained without an ounce of warmth. "Your late husband’s firm survived the 2008 crash only because Vance Capital quietly purchased sixty percent of your debt bonds. For the past three years, Mr. Arthur Vance allowed those notes to float without interest, purely out of respect for his daughter's marriage."

Marcus looked down at his bespoke watch.

"As of six minutes ago, Vance Capital called those notes due. Every single one of them. Payable within twenty-four hours."

Eleanor stumbled backward, her hand flying to her chest as if she had been physically struck. "Twenty-four hours? That’s bankruptcy! That's liquidation! Everything our family built—the manor in Greenwich, the penthouses, the firm—it’s all tied to those bonds!"

"Then you should have thought about that," I said, cold fury pulsing through every vein, "before you put your hands on me, tore my clothes, and kicked an image of your own grandchild across a floor like trash."

Chloe burst into tears, dropping to the floor in her twenty-thousand-dollar imported lace gown. "Daniel, fix this! Do something! Call someone!"

"Call who?!" Daniel roared, rounding on his sister with a savagery that stunned the crowd. "Who am I supposed to call?! The man who owns our entire world?!"
