Chapter 9 - The Fortress of Healing

Two hours later, the skies above the city hummed with the powerful, synchronized blades of two Black Hawk helicopters retrofitted for critical medical evacuation.
I stood on the hospital helipad, wrapped in my grandmother’s coat, watching as the military medical team carefully rolled the state-of-the-art incubator pods into the belly of the aircraft.
Inside the pods, Noah and Chloe slept peacefully, monitored by four of the country’s leading neonatal surgeons.
Grandfather stood beside me, his long wool trench coat billowing in the rotor wash.
"I'm sorry I stayed away so long, Audrey," he said quietly, his voice carrying over the roar of the engines. "When you told me five years ago that you wanted a normal life, a quiet life without military escorts and political scrutiny... I thought I was honoring your wishes by keeping my distance."
I leaned my head against his shoulder. "I thought I could build a real family on my own, Grandfather. I thought if I loved someone enough, it would be enough."
"A wolf doesn't change its nature because you invite it into the house," he replied sternly. "Daniel Miller is a coward. He sought you out because he sensed you were alone. Predators always target those they believe have no pack."
He looked down at me, his weathered face breaking into a proud, ferocious smile. "He forgot who raised you."
"What happens to him now?" I asked.
"The law will take its course," General Vance said. "And the military justice system does not possess a sense of humor regarding men who steal from our soldiers while abandoning their own flesh and blood."
We boarded the transport helicopter. As the aircraft lifted into the afternoon sky, leaving the city skyline below, I felt the heavy, suffocating weight that had crushed my chest for months finally dissipate.
