Chapter 7 - The Full Weight of the Command
Daniel fell to his knees right there on the NICU floor.
It was a pathetic, disgusting display. The arrogant, slick CEO who had walked in thirty minutes prior acting like God’s gift to mankind was now clutching his hands together like a beggar.
"Audrey, please! Tell him!" Daniel begged, looking up at me with wild, bloodshot eyes. "I made a mistake! I was seduced, I was confused! Rachel pursued me! She got pregnant on purpose to trap me! I love you! I love Noah and Chloe!"
"Daniel!" Rachel shrieked, clutching her stomach in horror. "You bastard! You told me you hated her! You told me she was a barren parasite until she got pregnant through IVF!"
"Get out!" Daniel screamed at her. "Get away from me, you ruined my life!"
"Enough," I said.
My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through their hysterical bickering instantly.
I walked over to where Daniel had dropped his leather briefcase. I picked up the blue folder containing the divorce settlement I had just signed.
"You took the apartment, Daniel. You took both cars. You took the health insurance. You emptied the children's accounts down to ninety-four dollars." I opened the folder and looked at my signature on the bottom line. "And you made me sign an unconditional surrender of all marital assets."
"I’ll tear it up!" Daniel scrambled toward me on his knees. "I’ll give you everything! I’ll sign the company over to you! I'll put ten million in trust for the twins!"
"You don't have ten million, Daniel," Major Miller stated calmly from behind his binder. "As of eight hundred hours this morning, the Department of Justice, in coordination with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, froze all domestic and foreign assets tied to Apex MedTech pending indictment for grand larceny and treasonous procurement fraud."
Daniel froze mid-crawl. "F-froze? Everything?"

"You don't own the cars," Major Miller continued mercilessly. "They were purchased with diverted federal funds and have been impounded. You don't own the apartment; it has been seized as proceeds of crime. And as for your health insurance—Apex MedTech has been stripped of its corporate charter. You are currently unemployed and personally liable for six point eight million dollars in federal restitution."
