Chapter 5 - The Illusion Shatters

Daniel’s briefcase slipped from his grip. It hit the linoleum floor with a heavy, hollow thud.
"Grand... Grandfather?" Daniel gasped, his face losing every trace of color until he looked like a walking corpse. "Audrey... what is this? You don't have a grandfather. You grew up in state foster care after your parents died in Germany!"
"My parents died at Ramstein Air Base," I said coldly, finally letting the full force of my gaze lock onto Daniel. "My father was a combat pilot. My mother was an army surgeon. When they were killed, my grandfather was running operations in the Middle East. He put me in private boarding schools under my mother’s maiden name to keep me safe from retaliation."
I took a step toward Daniel.
"I met you in college, Daniel. You told me you loved that I was independent. You said you admired how I didn't rely on anyone. And I never told you about my family because I wanted to know if you loved *me*, or if you loved the influence behind my last name."
Daniel began hyperventilating. His eyes darted frantically between me and the four-star General standing three feet away. "Audrey... baby, listen to me. There's been a terrible misunderstanding. I was just... I was stressed. The pressure of the business, the babies being early..."
"Silence," General Vance commanded.
The single word cut through the NICU like a razor.
The General turned around slowly. His eyes locked onto Daniel with the intensity of an artillery battery dialing in coordinates.
"Major Miller," the General said without looking away.
"Sir!" the officer with the briefing binder snapped to attention.
"Read the report."
Major Miller flipped open the black leather binder. "Daniel Miller. Founder and sixty-percent shareholder of Apex MedTech. Company incorporated five years ago utilizing a five-hundred-thousand-dollar seed loan guaranteed under the Small Business Military Spouse program—a loan authorized solely due to his marriage to Audrey Vance."
Daniel choked on his own saliva. "Wait—no—"
"Furthermore," Major Miller continued in a loud, clear drone, "over the past eighteen months, subject Daniel Miller has diverted four point two million dollars in company operational funds into off-shore accounts registered in Belize, while falsifying delivery receipts for sterile combat dressings intended for the Department of Defense."
Rachel gasped, grabbing Daniel’s arm. "Daniel! What is he talking about? You said that money was your quarterly bonus!"
May you like
"Shut up, Rachel!" Daniel hissed in sheer panic.
