Chapter 10 - The Desperate Crawl

Forty-eight hours later, the private neonatal intensive care wing at Walter Reed was silent save for the soft, steady hum of world-class life support machinery.
Noah had gained three ounces. Chloe had begun breathing room air for twenty-minute intervals without assistance. The doctors assured me that within six weeks, both of them would be ready to come home to the Vance family estate in Virginia.
I was sitting in an armchair beside their cribs, reading a book, when Major Miller knocked softly on the heavy mahogany door.
"Mrs. Vance," he said quietly.
"Audrey is fine, Major."
"Ma'am, there is a situation at the visitor control gate at the main perimeter."
I set my book down. "Daniel?"
"Yes, ma'am. He has been standing at the gate for six hours. The civilian police evicted him from his townhouse yesterday afternoon after federal marshals placed padlocks on the property. He has no money, his passport has been seized, and his legal counsel withdrew due to non-payment."
Major Miller hesitated. "He is demanding to see you. He claims he has critical information regarding the paternity of the other woman's child and wishes to negotiate."
I looked at Noah and Chloe, sleeping peacefully beneath their soft wool blankets.
"Let him in to the visitor interrogation room," I said calmly. "I want to hear what a ruined man sounds like when he runs out of lies."
Ten minutes later, I walked into the stark, gray-walled conference room in the base security building.
Daniel looked like a derelict. His designer suit was rumpled, stained, and smelled of sweat and cheap liquor. His hair was greasy, and dark purple bags hung beneath his bloodshot eyes.
The moment I walked in, flanked by two armed MPs, he lunged forward, throwing his hands onto the metal table.

"Audrey! Thank God! You have to listen to me!"
